Fullmer v Spider Webb Title fight (Interesting post-fight comments) The fight was in Fullmer's home state of Utah. Post fight comments "Anyplace outside of Utah - in hell if necessary." -Spider Webb, on a rematch with Fullmer and where. "They would rob their own mother. The irony of the thing is that this one official took the whole fight away from Spider by not giving him a single round." -Karl Nelson, Webb's trainer, on the decision and judge Boyd Mattison of Provo, Utah who failed to give Webb a round. "I'll fight Robinson on condition I get exactly as much percentage as he does. If Robinson won't go for that, I'll try to get a shot at Archie Moore's light heavyweight crown." -Gene Fullmer, on his next fight. 1959-12-04 : Gene Fullmer 159¾ lbs beat Spider Webb 157¾ lbs by UD in round 15 of 15 Location: George Nelson Field House, Logan, Utah, USA Referee: Ken Shulsen 147-141 Judge: Del Markham 148-138 Judge: Boyd Mattinson 150-132 "Champion Gene Fullmer again beat Ellsworth (Spider) Webb tonight with a wild-hooking attack for a unanimous 15 round decision in their fight for the NBA version of the middleweight crown in the fieldhouse of Utah State University. Fullmer's plunging, bludgeoning attack had Webb's knees wobbly in the 7th and 15th rounds, but he could not put the lanky challenger from Chicago down once. Webb slipped to the canvas in the 1st and 10th, but were not knockdowns. Fullmer went to the floor twice, but referee Ken Shulsen ruled that both were slips. However, Gene's descent in the 4th looked like a legitimate knockdown from a right to the chin. Fullmer suffered slight cuts on both brows and a nick under his lower lip." -United Press International Unofficial UPI scorecard - 146-140 Fullmer The UPI polled 12 ringside reporters, with 11 scoring it for Fullmer and 1 for Webb. just watched this fight in its entirety and to my eyes Fullmer won decisively. Webb seemed confused and put off his game by Fullmer's movement. Fullmer was normally too far away to be jabbed effectively and Webb stalked him without throwing punches until he found himself getting hit when Fullmer got off first, plus Fullmer tended to win the exchanges. Frankly, I was a bit underwhelmed by Webb in this fight, although his record coming in was outstanding. As for the fight being in Utah, other than Fullmer having his home folks behind him, I don't see why this would be critical. It is two men alone in the ring and I didn't see the ref doing anything unusual and there were relatively few clinches. Fullmer bulled Webb about now and then, but I didn't see any butts nor low blows or anything. Fullmer was rough and crude looking but fought cleanly as far as I could see. The two slips by Fullmer? Yeah, the thing in the fourth could be viewed as a knockdown, but Fullmer was not hurt and it was at most a flash knockdown or quite reasonably a slip. Fullmer bull rushed past Webb who hit him almost a reverse punch when he was going past like he was reaching out and pulling a guy back. Webb actually ended up behind Fullmer. Fullmer was down twice and both ruled slips, but Webb was down even more and a couple of times went down when he appeared to have been hit by left hooks, but the referee was consistent in calling everything slips. Fullmer never looked hurt or stunned, but Webb did in at least three rounds. My score was 10-4-1 for Fullmer. I don't see anything controversial about this fight, except perhaps the judge who gave every round to Fullmer, although while Fullmer to my eyes was at least competitive in every round, giving him all of them seems a bit much.
I just had a look in also. I have no problem with the decision for Fullmer, Webb could not time Fullmer comming in with his rushes. The slip/knock down in the fourth round looks like there was a punch thrown by Webb, but if there was no "Standing 8-count" in effect then it is irrelevant. Fullmer got up in a flash and just got on with it.
Their first fight was way more controversial. It was a robbery. But yeah, if you fought a Marv Jensen fighter west of the Rockies you better knock him out and even then theyd probably find a way to give him a draw.
