Evgeny Makarenko dominated the light heavyweight division between 2001-2006 in the amateurs. He soundly defeated Yoan Pablo Hernandez (who later went on to become IBF and Ring magazine cruiserweight champ) to advance in the quarter-finals of the Olympics where he would lose to eventual gold medal winner Andre Ward. Makarenko was captain of the Russian team in 2005. He holds notable victories over 2012 Olympic gold medal winner Egor Mekhontsev, Arthur Beterbiev and current WBC super middeweight champ Badou Jack just to name a few.

Here's what Kovalev had to say about Andre Ward recently:
"He won against our guy in the Olympic games. Makarenko was our best in Russia. Big respect to Andre Ward but I'm waiting to see if he will come up to 175 to welcome him."

Someone should go tell Kovalev that he won't have to wait much longer. Ward is coming for those belts!

Good info, the lightweight division is packed with talent now. Ward will be tough for anyone, and hope that they all fight each other.

Headgear would surely improve his chances vs Kovalev too.

    Yes he did. Good win.

You should check out his razor close robbery 17-15 win against the Uzbek in the semi-final. He held on like lonely gay octopus wrapped in sticky tape to prevent his opponent from scoring. It was disgraceful he shoud've had at least 4pts deducted from his score. At least.

Yes, I've seen that interview. Ward was certainly as good an amateur as he is a pro from what I've seen.

Ward hasn't lost in any fight since he was 12.

That's all we need to know

Yeah, especially Klitschko. He's been causing nothing but headaches and trouble to non-racist peoples for years.

Makarenko won his first amateur world championship in 2001 and was 31 at the time he fought Ward. He was ready to retire.

The LHW division is now the division to watch while the MW & HW division are in depression. There is a ton of talent at LHW and soon even more (Quillin) will migrate there.

That's nothing, Ward beat Clemete Russo as an amateur.

I'm watching highlights of it, and even in the highlights you see a lot of his hitting and holding.

If he starts that with Kovalev he's going to get hurt. Pascal tried it and it just made Kovalev angry.
