19:32 - Great Documentary as well, ending by Jack Dempsey is nice as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aGnctL3UOQ
Great documentary footage but for the fact that... Max Schmeling was NOT a Nazi, not a party member and got Eastern Front paratrooper service for not playing along with the party narrative. Max Baer was not a Jew by definition. The Star of David on his trunks was more show business than reality. Still, Max Baer was the very definition of heavyweight talent. Strong, big, athletic, ridiculous punching power... but he fell short from matters of the "neck up"...
He had many many conquests, and breach of promise lawsuits till he met his wife and was faithful to her til his death. There has never been a heavyweight who had Max Baer's personality. A shame Baer died at the young age of 50. In the picture Cinderella Man about Jimmy Braddock, the dumb scriptwriters made Max Baer a villain in the movie. Seeing that picture I cringed...
Both Maxes have been given a bum rap by the media/Hollywood. Schmeling being called a Nazi was a scandalous piece of nonsense that still influences the way he's seen today. Baer's portrayal the Braddock pic wasn't that bad, but still a dishonest portrait of the man.
The film isn't bad as far as boxing flicks go. Pretty schmaltzy and overly-sentimental, but decent fight scenes. You can tell they researched the way fighters fought back then, at the very least. Baer even does his little shorts pulling up routine, albeit with a snarl on his face.
Cinderella Man was a decent film but yeah, they portrayed Baer as a vicious, joyless killer who revelled in the fact he'd 'killed two men', which was ever-so-slightly OTT and must've pained his family knowing how much grief and guilt he felt for Campbell.
Slight film spoiler look away if you aint seen it ++++++++++ Its a good film, sadly they felt they had to make one the good guy and have counterpoint bad guy, to be fair he is not totally ott, as the end shows hes fair to Jimmy by shaking his hand after the loss
