Well, when you fight in the UK. Fights seem to get stopped with no one hurt. Calzaghe/Manfredo should be erased as a no contest.
The US could be 10 times its actual size and Hopkins would still be fighting in the US where the US promotors control the game. Saying that fighting in PA your entire career is the same as what Calzaghe is doing is illogical to say the least.
Yes, and just like Calzaghe, B-Hop never defended his belt outside of the U.S. and while he was champ he never moved up in weight to fight someone else; everyone who supports Hopkins's argument has very weak support.
Oh my god. IT has nothing to do with geography. Its about competition. When people say "You need to fight outside of the UK to prove yourself", they mean: You need to fight some of the top fighters, which just happen to fight in America. Calzaghe doesn't need to fight in America. But he needs to fight certain Americans. He did a good job getting some publicity by tearing Lacy a new ******* (though this was not a good TEST for him). And Kessler is was a good win for him, and a legitimate person to unifiy the titles win. But come on, Calzaghe has never had great opposition his entire career. I can't blame him because he's been successful, has a lot of fans, and a lot of money. But if he wants to say he's an ATG, P4P, HOF, acronym acronym acronym etc etc etc, he needs to fight a really GOOD fighter, better than anyone he's fought so far!
Hopkins defended his belt(s) against fighters FROM outside the US though. And his decisions were clear. I see no problem.
I'm not dissing Hop's accomplishments, I'm just saying that these 2 are pretty much even with BH having more high profile fights, but not necessarily greater comp. In fact, I argue that Hopkins lost against the greatest competition on his resume: RJJ and Jermaine Taylor. Oscar de la Hoya and Trinidad were great, but undersized, therefore deminishing their compertitive value.
why would bhop have to fight outside of the states anyway? the us is the center of boxing im sure.... if your one of the best in the place where its the most important you shouldnt have to leave.. people need to come to you
Only if you are the champ or the major fan draw. Boxing is a world sport, the challenger should go where the champ is regardless of nationality. And, understandably, the champ should go where the money is; for Joe, the money has been in the UK.
These SAME arguments are getting really tiresome now. Every single thread ends up in the same way. Give it a rest.
If it's so easy, why don't get off your fat ass and go pro? These are professional athletes, with very good records. Just because they are European and you've never bothered to watch them in your life doesn't mean they are bums Nobody is saying Calzaghe has fought legends, but they are good fighters, that have not only been beaten but beaten well
