Never really understood it. What is it based on?? Seems like more of a bizarre who's most well known in the media competition. Doesn't really factor in achievement and it's not based on personality is it? Wasn't Tiger Tim up for it most years? Dull as paint that fella
If it's about personality running alongside achievements Declan Rice should be in there. Unofficial captain of England, the true leader on the pitch, captain of a really entertaining and decent West Ham side, never shy's away from the camera or mic, is as honest as they come and a really positive character at the same time, literally a lad living the dream and enjoying every single second of it. That's a sporting personality and one that has been consistently at the top of his game throughout the whole year.
As I said when AJ 'snubbed' this nonsense https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...orts-personality-awards.621286/#post-19590573
I used to really enjoy Sports personality of the year but its morphed into god awful unwatchable tripe. It used to be a fun little recap of the years sporting events, with decent highlight packages punctuated by some awards. These days it just seems to be 2 hours standing ovations and dramatic music punctuated by the most boring, tedious interviews I've ever heard often given by sports people I've never even heard of.
It was actually called BBC Sports Review of the Year. The award was important to the show and the viewers but it was not some stupid gala awards event with all this stupidity. @Holler describes it well. As does @UmarIFLUmar
It has nothing to do with personality. "Personality" can be used in various contexts and like most words has different meanings. In this case, it denotes "sportsperson". It's remarkable how many people still don't get this. Maybe it should be changed to "BBC Sportsperson of the Year". The nominees are the BBC's idea of who has achieved the most in sport for that year. It's a load of nonsense. I've not watched it even once.
It is not even who has achieved the most. Since we end up with female footballers, or mens hockey players or rowers or F1 drivers, getting voted in the top 3 or top 5. Lots of previous winners are playing in a sport with a ridiculously narrow talent pool, and low level of competition compared to majority sports like footbally, rugby or boxing. Being in the top 500 male footballers in the world is objectively a far better achievement than being the olympic gold medal winning rower or the mens F1 champion. The number participating is so much higher. That is NEVER taken into account.
This is an entirely separate discussion. But the award is indeed intended for the candidate with the perceived most significant sporting achievement of the year. Your comment regarding football is outrageous, by the way.
Andy "anyone but England" Murray. Gladly received his knighthood whilst voting for Scottish independence.. Cuckoo cuckoo!
I don't think there's any maybe about it, it should because if something can be used in various contexts and there's a far more clearer term to use instead use that. I understand the meaning of the word, I think we all do, the meaning of the award, in 2021, not so much.
Hate this shite, they could just do a transworld sports of the year, although that name has alsort of connotations these days, then have a text vote in that gets revealed at the end. Done.
They have it to Ryan Giggs many years ago for playing a handful of games that season which was completely random based on his handful of performances that season. They turned it into a lifetime achievement award just for him.
Well, yes. I do agree. The word is a bit stupid because there’s several words that are much better and it stops the whole “he’s not got any personality” debates every year. I have never watched it, though. I don’t like the BBC.
