It was a big deal, it was all over the news and shown live on the BBC, which is a first for the US open.

It`s ironic that he`s playing Jimmy Saville in a mini series about that creep soon then.

Aye It got a lot of media coverage, granted. I still don't know anyone who watched it.

England reaching the final for the first time since 66, now THAT took the nation by storm.

This tennis bird winning it was predictable. Tennis is a upper class toff sport. Boxing isn't.

Both Fury and Josh Taylor are crying so much about not being nominated/winning yet at the same time, they tell everyone that they don't care about it.

I don't see what value this trophy/award actually holds. It's a rubbish awards ceremony that BBC hold every year to make themselves feel important and could it have any one worse hosting it than Gary Lineker? The man who has an opinion on absolutely everything.

As someone said already, it's a box ticking exercise for the BBC. Female/Gay/Disabled/Black. Get them all in as much as possible.

Tennis isn't a game what people talk about "down the pub". So is that how the SPOTY is decided, is it? Over a pack of mussels and 3% Belgium craft nonsense down at the Dog & Duck.

Do me a favour, mate. So she wasn't all over the news? On front page papers, both black & red tops? Nobody cares about Fury. He's literally beaten the same man THREE times, why would he win an award for it?

Do yhey talk about tennis in coffe shops though? Pubs are dissappearing and soon there will be more coffee shops than pubs in the UK.

As irritating as Raducanu is, and however weak women's tennis currently is, in addition to her soft draw, winning the US Open is still a big deal.

Regardless, this award is always pre-determined. This has been obvious for a very long time. There have been far less deserving winners over the years than Raducanu, and many winners from obscure sports that the BBC loves.

Everything about the award is odious, but it's quite funny to read through the discussion on boards like this about it. Awards, in general, are not my thing. They are also practically pointless in an ethical sense, but good commercially. Lineker, one of the most detestable blokes I've ever seen. So smarmy, hypocritical and one of the biggest virtue-signallers going, at present, and that is saying a lot!

Fury will say he doesn't care - and he probably doesn't care that much, but if he won it he would've loved it and it would've been in keeping with his fake media persona that he's been refining over the past few years.

If Raducanu hadn't won the US Open then they would have just given it to Tom Daley for being an arse bandit.

Dont put words in my mouth. I was merely saying that she wasn't the talk of the town.

England cricket team gets tons of media coverage, and who gives a flying one about cricket? Loads do I know, but does that mean they're on everyone's lips? I was adressing mark Ant's statement of this tennis bird taking the nation by storm, which she didnt.

I never mentioned Fury, not once..

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2...n-win-serves-up-audience-of-92m-for-channel-4

I'm not pretending that's as big as the approx 30 million who watched the Euro 2020 final. But 9.2m is huge for Channel 4.

Sky Sports recently hit its top daily average viewing figures of 1.2 million, by comparison.

The people who watched that US Open final won't just have been your traditional hardcore sports fans. It'll be people who rarely watched sport but wanted to see if she could win it. Just the kind of people who would watch and vote on SPOTY.

As an aside I think Taylor should have been nominated instead of Fury, his achievement was massive and he will go down in the history books as the first undisputed British world champion. Thanks to comatose UK broadcasters, it had zero cut-through to the general population.

For me, Raducanu was a deserved winner. In 2021 she has come from absolutely nowhere to a Grand Slam winner.
