AJ fans get called nut huggers casuals Matchroom bots etc but let's look at Tyson Fury , had no real fanbase before the Wlad fight and it's only grown since he became an internet pantomime/WWE character during his exile , the vast majority of his fans are casuals who have no idea he actually lost to McDermott back in the day.
An argument could be made that people who don't appreciate the skillset Fury brings to the table are casuals, and the ones who do are genuine fans and hardcores, whereas the fanboys that jumped on the AJ bandwagon because he's all muscular and gives them their much desired KO's are in fact the biggest casuals in the sport.
I liked Fury a lot more before he was champ as I would occasionally see him about when I was at university and he was an up and comer. Back then I thought he'd get to Brit/Euro level and was ducking Price so shows what I know! I do largely attribute that to some lacklustre showings against the likes of McDemott - who beat him the first time round IMHO - Pajkic and shot Cunningham though.
Nah I've been a Fury fan since day one streaming his fight with Scott Belshaw on the work computer Pre Wlad the "hardcores" used to take the **** out of me for repping fury they said he was a glass jawed bum who hits himself etc. Them he beats Wlad and suddenly all they can talk about is the slick skills, "the stance the southpaw to orthodox " all that **** which I knew all along. Only thing is they have started hyping him TOO MUCH. Fury takes punches in fights lol he's got good D but he's not pbf I don't think he can take wilders So I see the "hardcores" jumping off the bandwagon in 2 months time
I use social media a lot, and from what I’ve seen, Tyson doesn’t have a casual fan base. Most casuals think he’s boring in the ring. Most don’t appreciate his skills. He regularly gets criticised. AJ is the ticket seller. He’s the entertainer. He’s the one with the huge casual following.
I've been a Fury fan since the first time I saw him fight, which was the Cunningham fight. The way he won, plus him snatching the mic afterwards and singing a song to the crowd, I though that was some funny stuff. Fury ud Wilder.
Casuals are what fill the venues and generate most of the money. AJ has got many more casual fans than Fury or any other Boxer i can think of on the planet. And there is nothing wrong with that, youve gotta earn real Boxing fans respect and youve gotta be marketed right and be exciting in the ring to get the casuals respect and he seems to be ticking all the boxes for everybody.
Wilder fans are **** stupid. They don't realize that he is knocking out career school teachers, bread makers, cruisers, and the medically unfit. Anyone who can look at the obvious dive of the Scott fight--his personal friend--and still root for the guy has the IQ of a houseplant. As for Fury, yeah, I am a "casual" for being intrigued by the abilities of a 6'9", ambidextrous boxer who unseated an ATG champion. Dumb ****.
1) Agree that Fury's skills are miles ahead of 95% of the HW division 2) Fury's skills > AJ's skills 3) AJ is developing a style that enables himself to maximise his physical advantages. Nothing too special tbh but AJ > Fury (at least at the moment) why? 4) Because Fury is a casual at heart. Dude has a huge pile of talent and the physical dimensions to be a truly terrifying heavyweight. Yet he flushes it all down the crapper because he can't dedicate himself to his craft and maintain focus. Then he plays around with peds and coke when he should be in the gym. Parties when he should be running. AJ will beat the brakes off Fury simply because Fury couldn't be arsed to get into the sort of rock-solid shape and mental sharpness that a fight with a physical specimen like AJ demands. That's IF he ever gets to fight AJ, because imho he's cashing out vs Wilder who is going to KO him but, should in fact be easy prey for him at his best. I genuinely hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt it.
All this "Fury fans", "Joshua fans", "Wilder fans" "Hardcores/Casuals" is everything that's wrong with boxing. People talk as if you can only be a supporter of one fighter and if you're a fan of one you must be a detractor of the other. They are very different fighters and have made the division interesting again. Is it not possible to appreciate or criticise without attaching a label?
