Fury-Ruiz Jr is a bigger fight than Fury-Whyte. People seem to be forgetting that Fury is a star in America. Whyte doesn't have a profile in the US.
In 30 years time nobody is going to remember those epic defences against the likes of Takam, Breazeale, Molina, Povetkin, Pulev, Paint Dry etc. And let's not forget how he won his two championships, against the legends in Martin and Rice Pudding Jr. He will be the forgotten man.
That's the point though, he doesn't deserve 20%. His commercial value is below that. 20% is by far his biggest pay day yet. Fury did 900,000 buys last fight and 1,250,000 the fight before and also a $10,000,000 gate. Dllian did 200,000 and 300,000 buys for Povetkin at a lower price in Eddie's back garden and a function room of a casino.
I'm not that fussed, there are far more exciting and competitive divisions, we're living in the Josh Taylor era, this is his time.
Can see Fury fighting in America against a top 15 opponent in April. So long as we eventually get an undisputed fight with Fury/Joshua/Usyk involved I’m not bothered how we get there.
AJ has fought mandatories before, right? Tell us the percentages that he gave to those fighters. I think Pulev was one, Povetkin another, Usyk the other. What did he give them? Let's get the figures out there, good and accurate.
Do let's. And while we are at it. Let's reread your first sentence again. And the next sentence should be "Fury has never fought a mandatory, right?"
We agree on that. But you wanted to talk about AJ's percentages against what is being proposed for Fury-Whyte. You made a whole post about it. But completely failed to tell us how much his mandatory challengers were paid. Instead you talk about champions Parker and Ruiz. If you are talking about Ruiz as challenger, he was paid a generous amount because they were desperate for an American challenger. Still, he wasn't paid anywhere near 45%. It would have been under 30%. I suspect AJ's mandatories (all of them established names in the division too) took 20% to 30%, if that. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks. And Merry Christmas!
Didn’t AJ take a quite low % against Charles Martin in order to get the fight? I know it was an easy touch but if you genuinely believe in yourself you don’t price yourself out of 2 world title fights like Whyte has done so far. You go in, get the win then hold all the cards later on.
. Exactly what Jack Johnson did 113 years ago tomorrow, to get Tommy Burns to give him a crack at the title.
