FD, Fury came back from round 9 and arguably won one of the championship rounds and threw 100 punches over the last 3 rounds. A fighter gassing in round 5 and with a broken nose on top of that doesnt do that against Usyk. Fury was in an elite level fight and was showing some fatigue. Hardly gassing in round 5.
I honestly thought he fought the best fight he could against Usyk, he used his jab gave Usyk angles and dominated the middle rounds. It was Usyk who had to make adjustments during this fight and he did. But that was Furys best and it wasn't enough, Usyk is just a more complete fighter at the end if the day.
OK maybe gassing is the wrong word. He does have high level recuperative ability which we've seen many times.
I think (among other fights) Fury and team should review Larry Holmes' two Michael Spinks fights... A bigger, heavier, great jabber... relying mostly on counterpunches and hesitating to capitalize on possible opportunities against a smaller but much quicker and less predictable opponent....
Usyk hit Belly so hard he had no idea what month it was This content is protected And he hit AJ so hard he turned him into a mental patient This content is protected
I thought the tactics we're spot on use the height and reach, keep the distance and use the jab. Mix it up with right hand and uppercut which was breaking usyk down. The problem was Tyson visibly slowed allot after the seventh, stopped using the jab and neglected his defenses. When he stopped using the jab it made it easier for usyk to get close. Great fight between two technically excellent fighters with one being just that bit better than the other and finding a way to win as he always does to turn it around.
It was scheduled for late December last year before Ngannou damaged him badly, that's what confused him, concussion does that. Regardless the thing I'm most disappointed with is how he took the loss, especially after all the **** he gave Deontay for being a sore loser, I always thought if Fury ever lost he'd be good about it but damn.... blamed favouritism because of a war..... just as bad as Deontay.
I agree I thought that's what he would do but he gave usyk too much respect. In the rematch I expect him to use his size way and fight more dirty.
Just echoing the point a couple other folks made here -- that it was a great and, yes, close fight, and these two guys laid a hurtin' on each other. So for the rematch I admittedly don't have the answers as to what Fury's gameplan will or should be. But there are two changes he definitely needs to make, and on this I suspect we all agree: He has to tamp down his bipolar outbursts and stop whining.... and he has to kick Daddy John the f out of his corner....
One of the best posts I’ve seen on this fight.. How great Fury looked up to 7, best he’s looked in YEARS in several ways, and Usyks ability to turn it around is really the story of the fight, and also what makes Usyks own performance so impressive in my mind.
Tyson Fury needs to fight like a big man vs Usyk. He needs to jab and land big right hands in the process. He needs to sit on his punches and commit even if that means his chances of getting caught/knocked out are greater. He needs to stop posturing, making faces, and running and hurt Usyk. He did this in certain parts of rounds 4-6 and had his best rounds and even hurt Usyk. Even though Fury is not the biggest puncher he is able to hurt Usyk because he has 30-40 pounds on him He got walked down by a Cruiserweight and it wasnt only when he was tired. It was even in round 1. He needs to be a front foot fighter and not a backfoot fighter
Fury's mixing of front and back foot in the mid rounds was his fight, he just didn't have the stamina to pull it off and got sloppy. Fury isn't an idiot. He knows how to fight. He won't change for the rematch. Just more focused and hopefully a little fitter. The posturing from Fury wasn't all games although he was having fun...he was UP FOR THE FIGHT which Fury probably hasn't felt for YEARS. He doesn't see it as a big show...it's just a fight and he has fun. Meanwhile everyone else is biting on every feint or move Usyk does. Fury didn't at all. He took away Usyk's jab...how with his feet & range. Usyk returned the favour with his feet to keep a simple pressure which is how he won round 1 whilst Fury just got an eye for it. Fury then got his nose popped and his feet slowed due to his stamina running low and usyk managed to find his fight. Fury threw the sloppiest arm punching combo you've ever seen and BANG, Usyk found that opportunity as he should. You can't fight Usyk in straight lines which pretty much all big men fight like coming forward. Fury is special because he can move laterally when he is holding ground or on the backfoot which none of these other plodding bums like AJ can do, as such Fury will use it and should use it. You see him shifting on Usyk? You seen any of the other plodding bums do that? Hell no. Fury is complete as they come. If Fury came in with that Kronk straight line stutter step BS he would have got boxed up the joint. Instead he came herking and jerking all over the place making Usyk over reach and making him pay. It was fantastic. Fury can win the rematch it's very simple back into the gym next week. Cardio focus. Eating a lot of calories to maintain his 260 pound weight and live the life. Avoid boxing training till camp time to preserve his joints & get some proper sparring this time. Does anyone rate the guys he was sparring? I don't. You think he could spar properly with the eye risk? no. Was he fit as he could be? yes. Could he be fitter? YES.
