I don’t think he is seen as ‘charming’ particularly.. And why do you ALWAYS mention Bruno!!??

Does this prove that AJ has made the right move fighting Miller in New York then?

Even if that happens, it doesn’t mean fury reaches the level of popularity AJ has achieved, that’s not how it works.

Khabib isn’t suddenly going to start filling out stadiums because he beat McGregor.

This. Yes if Fury beats Wilder in the rematch and goes on to beat Joshua the he would surpass him..but he will never be the bigger star. If you need any proof go outside. People LOVE Joshua. Doesnt matter if they young or old, black or white, English or African everyone loves him!

Like wizbit said people like AJ dont come around often...but of course this thread will get derailed with idiots hating on both men.

Im such a big fan of both Fury and Joshua..

I would argue Fury could become a bigger star in America than Joshua is. This $32m to fight Miller is ridiculous and isnt based on anything other than a headline to grab American interest.

On the other side i would argue that these heavies are only popular or known so much, especially over here BECAUSE of AJ. Lets be honest the heavyweight division is pretty poor as a whole but people are are paying to see Whyte v Chisora! Thats an AJ spin off basically.

Globally? Yes, it's unlikely but there's a chance. Style wise he can be a tough sell to the non purist but the back from the brink narrative coupled with Tyson's genuine charisma means there's a lot of potential there if things work out his way. If the rematch is exciting and Fury wins in style and wins over the US audience it could see him genuinely break the US market and ride that fame to a level beyond AJ.

Domestically it's a harder sell. AJ has an immense start on him due to London 2012 and astute brand building over a long period. Plus here the memories for the darker side of Fury's back story are longer. So although he can boost his popularity with some good performances and pr, I don't think he'd overtake AJ before career end.

I'm not gay myself but it's good to see you posting here because historically speaking boxing has been a homophobic environment and csadly attracted a lot of small minded people who probably were struggling with impulses of their own and overcompensating. So I think it's great that you're on here and unafraid to give a gay mans perspective. All credit to you.

Fury's career has seriously blown up, that's true.

He's learned to be far more media friendly for one, there was a time he'd never be allowed on live TV because anything could come out of his mouth, but now he's learned to still be opinionated but not rub people up the wrong way doing it, he's shown a softer side of himself, from the mental health issues, the support for testicular cancer charities to giving the Wilder purse away to the homeless. Kind of like Foreman when he returned he's far more able to get the media on his side and say the right things than before.

I said before the first fight him getting robbed could change people's views on him, much like it did with Lewis when he was robbed vs Holyfield. Both Lewis and Fury were not the most popular UK heavyweight, Lewis was the Canadian while Fury the Gypsy, but the UK loves nothing more than an underdog story and him being robbed basically saw all his past transgressions forgiven in the media because the narrative of a plucky underdog Brit being robbed by the yanks again sells better and appeals to British sensibilities.

Fury as a brand has done really well considering the comparative lack of marketing he’s had.

He won’t ever overtake Joshua commercially, Joshua is a marketers dream.

I don’t think Joshua is as big a star as he should be though. He lacks X-Factor and personality. Even people who are casual fans can see he’s not authentic and a bit awkward.

By some, but really he is nothing like Bruno. Bruno didn't need to tell people he was humble, unlike Joshua who mentions it every two minutes.

The problem for Fury is that the British press went seeking him out only when he had won some titles, no media training so it was easy for them.
Joshua hands them stories on a plate, like the Eddie Chambers texts, but he is the golden boy, never even looked into.
