I watched it without sound and it looked a decent stoppage to me. Pajkic could have lasted another 30 seconds or so but his wild swings were looking decreasingly powerful thus negating the chance of a bingo punch. I had no problem with the timing of that stoppage.
People use the line that, "it's better too early than too late". But refs need to learn to stop fights at the correct point. I'm a Fury fan by the way, but it was a bad stoppage. I think Pajkic was hurt, and I think Fury could easily have got another knockdown in that round. But so what? Pajkic may still be able to get up again and survive the round. And if he does survive the round, who knows what happens in the next... You should be concerned with the safety of fighters. But you shouldn't be trying to make the sport as safe as possible at the cost of the sport itself. You could make Formula 1 safer if you put a 60mph speed limit on it. Obviously, you would be killing the sport in the process. What "British stoppages" will do, is rob us of many of the greatest fights.
Pajkic was still fighting back. If the ref hadn't stepped in he very likely would have survived the round and used the minute rest to recuperate. Because the fight was stopped too soon we'll never know. It is just as likely Pajkic would have landed another roundhouse right and put Fury on his arse again, which would have been followed by the promoter having a heart-attack. After Pajkic put Fury down in the second, he landed another punch that seriously hurt Fury enough for him to hang on like grim death. It's unfortunate that Pajkic wasn't able to extricate himself at that crucial moment as Fury would probably have landed on his face. Does anyone recall who the two English judges were? I know the Canadian was William Boodhoo. :bbb
It doesn't matter if Fury would have ended the fight in that round or the next, the fight should have carried on. While he was hurt, there was nothing to say he couldn't see out the remaining 20 seconds. British boxing is a shambles. It's no wonder we aren't breeding fighters like we used to. Fury himself was rightly annoyed. Fighters should be annoyed, even in victory. What good are these stoppages? Boxers need wars, they need high intensity battles of attrition. If you keep denying boxers that right, then when they come up against good boxers from nations who are allowed to war, they're going to have a distinct disadvantage when the going gets tough. British refs are an embarrassment. They're ruining our boxing scene. All the best fights in boxing wouldn't have happened with todays British boxing refs policing the fight.
That's the way I see it also. It's fine worrying about the safety of the boxers, but as a spectacle the sport is suffering and becoming farcial in many ways. If this issue isn't addressed the sport will become more and marginalised and insignificant.
