Yes for me the top 4 1. Usyk 2. AJ 3. Whyte 4. Fury There's over a dozen or so fighters in the divison I would back to beat Wilder so last night changes nothing. Now if Fury beats someone quality for the first time since his comeback like Whyte then I would change my opinion.
Please name at least a dozen boxers who you would back to beat Wilder. Last night showed that he's as tough as nails and has a hellacious punch. I would not be backing many, that is for sure!
Mate Povetkin could barely walk during the rematch. He was clearly completely destroyed by Covid. He was genuinely unsteady during his ring walk. It’s no coincidence that he retired straight after because if he wanted to box on he could have easily continued to get decent slots on Hearn’s PPV undercards.
Sorry this is a terrible take. There is no justification for anyone ranking Whyte above Fury, even on the eye test alone. It would be like a fan seeing a premier league season ending with Man City winning the title but arguing that Spurs after finishing sixth were the better side overall.
Whyte has by far the superior resume the past 5 years during that beating Povetkin,, Parker, Rivas, Chisora and Helenius. The best during that time Wilder has beaten during that time is Wilder and Wallin and I would back the majority of Whytes named abovr opponents against them.
Do you honestly believe any of them would cause Fury any problems? Fury already destroyed Chisora in their rematch years earlier than Whyte fought him. And Chisora arguably best Whyte the first time round. Rivas? Helenius? Really? In that time Whyte has also been totally sparked out. Fury went down against a far more destructive puncher in Wilder in two fights yet got back up. He is levels above Whyte.
Mitch finally jumped the shark with that top four. NO man born from his mother has anyone other than the Gypsy King as the clear number one of this era. Fury probably needs to dispatch of USKY to add the cherry on his legacy and strengthen his ATG credentials but he'll get little credit in hindsight for destroying a pumped up cruiserweight whos biggest test so far has been a shot to pieces delboy chisora. Fury schooled PRIME chisora twice ten years ago lets not forget.
I was at the first Fury v Chisora fight at Wembley Arena in July 2011 sitting next to Dave Price who was there to observe the progress of potential future opponents before he hit British Title level himself. Fury was the underdog in that fight and played with Dull Boy for the entire fight - big bombs were thrown at him and he made Chisora look stupid. You could see then he was going to challenge for a World Title but never did I believe he would achieve this level of success back then. The other thing I remember from the night was looking around and about 10 of the Eastenders cast were there including Jake Wood. This was big time Boxing for Fat Mick
Ah Mitch mate, I think it's brilliant that you have alternative views and you always articulate them without mocking or patronising. However, you do yourself a disservice in how you ignore the context and what the eyes see. This is an example of your logic. Lets say Man City beat Leicester City, that's a good solid win. You would add value to that win because Leicester won the league in 2016. You would ignore the fact that the current Leicester team is nowhere near that level anymore. Povetkin of 2021 is not the Pov of 2020 or 2019 or 2018. The context is that he got old and shot. Something that can happen over night not because a resume' tells you that but because of what you can see. Whyte's victory over Povetkin in 2021 is much much less impressive than a win over him had it happened in 2018 for example. So resume's don't tell the whole story.
I've had a few hours kip and reassessed what I watched this morning. The fight was incredibly entertaining and will go down as a classic. Wilder is a massively dangerous fighter. Yes he only throws the right hand but it is incredibly risky to be in range because he throws it so fast and his timing is quality. There is less emphasis on skills in the heavyweights and more on who can land big...that's what Wilder does so well. Fury has the heart of a lion. Again getting chinned several times and having the will to dig deep and carry on. His approach last night was reckless, I think Wilder had really got under his skin and like AJ against Whyte, Fury abandoned the boxing skills and wanted to proper beat him up. When he did actually start boxing behind the jab he got the job done in 2 rounds. He could have made that a lot easier for himself last night and that's his flaw which is his mindset. Added to that, his footwork has left him. He's a warrior though, there's no self preservation there especially when you compare him to Joshua who does not react well to a shot. Fury loves a fight.
