If they want to check it off the bucket list good for them that's their business. Neither are champion anymore and they can fight whoever they want. So far as the sport goes this is a fight that should have been made 5-7 years ago. I was never really into Fury v AJ I always was more into them fighting other people but if you were super into it I guess this can serve as some closure. But I'm not sure either fanbase is really comfy with the notion of a fight in 2027 deciding who was better. And regardless of how dated it is this fight will still serve that purpose.
It doesn't mean anything at this point. Someone on the level of Prenga would've beaten aj if he didn't fold to the first right hand he got hit with and Dubois blew him away. Fury's shot. Neither will get significant credit from logical boxing fans assuming the fight even happens
Great video as always, Rummy. You hit on some important points, and thing or two I respectfully disagree with. A few observations. ---"...as the bus halls ass down the British equivalent of the Garden State Parkway, driving on the wrong side of the road." WELL DONE! Well done. So much going on in that metaphor. --You are 100% correct that the fans are enjoying the "Wild West" era. There has been a real and profound cultural shift about our feelings on multiple champions. When I was a kid, the boxing community HATED having three, or even two champions. These days, we hate having unified, except as one big event. When Usyk was on top, you could come on here and get the complaints every day that he should give up one or more titles so that we can have more heavyweight title fights. And that is the reality of what people want. This is part of why Larry Holmes, about whom the press had some real mixed feelings in his day, has been re-cast as the third or fourth best ever. It just isn't a big deal that he wasn't undisputed, anymore. A very good poster on here that I like a lot even says that he WAS undisputed. Undisputed is now redefiend as the consensus champ, and all the other titles fights are just good fun. ---You are right that this fight still has some historical significance, because even though we don't know what would have happened if it took place when the fight was hot, it is the only evidence that we will have for who was the best of the three kings (though if Joshua loses, we will still need a losers bracket with Wilder to determine #2!). But, the significance declines every day. They really did bottle it five years ago, and continue to bottle it now, and every minute this thing stalls, it loses a little overall value. There are no titles on the line. It is for hundreds of millions. Just get in the ring. ---I am deeply conflicted about the idea of Usyk as still the true champion. He's my favorite fighter since the 90s, and I vehemently defended that he should not be saddled with all these mandatories starring at him. He should have time to fight Deontay Wilder. There is one world, there should be one world champion, and one #1 contender that he should have to face no more than once a year. HOWEVER...it was always pointed out to me that except for the Fury fights, he basically only fights once a year, and when he made it clear that he was only going to grant fights to big money opponents--with the right "pay architecture," or however Lapin phrased it--it seems like it was a good abdication. Guys like Kabayel, Parker and Wardley deserve a path, and yes, maybe they should be fighting each other to get there rather than getting an ABC ranking, but if you are going to fight once a year as champion, it can't be Verhoueven. Usyk is now the Emeritas champ. god bless him, and I hope for his continued success wealth building, and legacy building as such. But right now, there is no champion, and will not be until some of the alphabet guys unify.
I don't think this is too late in the sense that Fury would stop AJ in any year they would have fought.
It might still be entertaining. But in terms of its importance to boxing it doesn’t mean anything now
