Usyk did have only one mandatory he “HAD” to face in 2026, which was Wardley. He vacated
the WBO title for this reason. Why did Usyk get Kabayel as a mandatory then?

The reason behind this is the Rico fight. The WBC sanctioned the bout, and in turn, Usyk would have to face their mandatory in his next fight.

So your point about fighters like Uysk getting saddled with mandatories at least in the year 2026 doesn't really hold true because once all the belts are unified, mandatories are done in turns once a year by each belt organization. Uysk had a model treatment from the belts (in 2026).

 

Rico was already #1. He got an exemption to fight Rico.

 

I find it to be an extremely good metaphor, and it kind of bookends the Usyk era well with the "three kings" era.

 

Fair enough. Very true about public perception being easily swayed by fights like these.

 

Just like most of the big fights it's a bit overly ripe about to start rotting on the vine but still edible

P.S. It's too late for this fight in a sporting sense, since it didn't happen for the undisputed champion (shame); not late for their legacy
And I would consider it a surprise if Fury lost this fight.

 

Major fights have devolved into old hasbeen vs other old hasbeen, old hasbeen vs Jake Paul, and lots of overhyped nepo babies doing it for their dads, like the Tszyu boys, Benn & Eubank.

In Australia old hasbeen rugby hard men can make a good post football retirement living from PPV slug outs. Paul Gallen & Nelson Asofa-Solomona being recent examples, with Mundine as the pioneer.

Speaking of Australia, Mundine (himself one) and nepo babies.
Tony Mundine's son, Rahim, is 25, and has recently turned pro, while Danny Green's son Archie is 18, still at high school, with a few amateur bouts, and it's already being talked up by No Limit (to the BS) as a "super fight"' of the future.

 

It is definitely too late. The most ideal time was 2021. It should have happened spring 2025 at the latest. However, sometimes fights between 2 older boxers can be somewhat entertaining like Wilder vs Chisora for example. I just don't get the hype and acting like it's the biggest fight in boxing, which clearly isn't true.

 

The best part of AJ Fury was always going to be Fury smack talking AJ for fun and AJ losing his rag instantly not the physical fight. Fury is leagues ahead, why AJ Wilder was always a bigger fight if it got made. Total pick em'. Fury AJ is not a pick em' fight.

Fury doesn't box his face off so easily anymore due to the regression. Takes him the distance and on points.

 

FIVE Years late in terms of it's 'optimal' historical significance I think, but can still be an enjoyable spectacle!

They'll be "needing" another fight each first if this carries on.

 

Yes, I liked the balanced outlook as usual.

However, I think this fight has gone sour with those who are keen boxing fans and perhaps even the general public. Mainly due to the saga leading towards it. Had it come together smoothly within months, it would have more goodwill behind it than it has now after the disrespect to the sport that once again that has come into play.

Sure people will follow and watch it, but I believe there's also a growing sentiment out there of getting it over and done with now.
