Both the Thomas and Mack and The MGM Grand are iconic Las Vegas venues. Every boxing fan has heard of them. Same as Caesars Palace and The Las Vegas Hilton. But I can't for the life of me understand why they've chosen this unglamorous, unknown, uninspiring German as the foil for The Gypsy KIng's in his Las Vegas debut.
Evander Holyfield v Riddick Bowe 1 Pernell Whitaker v Oscar De La Hoya Lennox Lewis v Evander Holyfield 2 Evander Holyfield v Michael Moorer 2 Manny Pacquiao v Erik Morales 2 Joe Calzaghe v Bernard Hopkins Floyd Maywether Jr v Zab Judah Ricky Hatton v Jose Luis Castillo Oscar De La Hoya v Ike Quartey Jose Luis Castillo v Diego Corrales ..... to name a few. if he said he never heard of it, he must be on a wind up, surely.
Thomas and Mack has staged some big fights but the MGM Grand Garden is a far more iconic venue in my opinion. Second in the States for me after Madison Square Garden.
It weren’t about hearing about it. It’s about being in Vegas in 2019! When was the last time it held a big fight? It hasn’t had a big fight there for at least 7 years and before then? The T Mobile is where superstars fight in Vegas and before that it was the MGM. At least they’ve realised this now and moved venue.
Fury and Ben clearly wanted an easy fight after pushing ahead of schedule for Wilder. They picked Shwarz because he's an unknown quantity in the US and UK with an unbeaten record to help sell an otherwise mediocre opponent. They draw less flack than they would matched up to a similar standard US fighter.
Are we absolutely certain this is the Grand Garden and not the Marquee Ballroom? I'm being semi-serious.
This fight is absolute gash. Come on, surely nobody thinks otherwise. This isn't like one of those fights that hardcores say won't sell when it clearly will. SUrely this sells to nobody.
Showcase fight for Fury, expose him more to a US audience. Nothing more, nothing less. And please, spare me the bull**** about him being justified due to his layoff. He's already had two bums pre-Wilder, plus if he was the next coming of Ali and Pernell Whitaker like everyone makes out, he'd have no issue with an A-Tier opponent. Given HW's fight once every 6 months at most, we're looking at December for a higher-than-doorman level of opponent, HOPEFULLY. That's a full year, and when you take into consideration he was only out for two...absolute joke. The HW div is not called the Clown Division for no reason.
