Fury does need a tune up, in the sense that it would good for us boxing fans for him to fight in March or April, and for Usyk and AJ to fight April, and for the winners to fight each other (July to September). It is just better for Fury to remain active and get his tune up soon, rather than get it delayed. Assuming Usyk is facing AJ next, and unavailable, the best thing for boxing is for Fury to get a stay busy fight, a tune up. Dillian Whyte is a tune up. But he's acting like he's a big fish in the division and doesn't exactly instill confidence that he'll be willing to step up in April. Obviously no one wants Helenius. I'd rather Fury fought Ruiz or Parker or Wallin or even Kabayel, if Whyte doesn't want it.
I never get why a world level guy would ever need a tune up against a complete nobody, surely they spar better opposition in the gym on a daily basis.
I've never heard of ANY elite fighter needing a tune up, ever. Besides, Tyson had a bunch of them before he fought the same man three times. He needs consistency against the very best not named Wilder. Robert Helenius is not one of them.
I hope you're not one of these people who says "I don't care about the belts, they are meaningless. I like to see the best fight the best." Joshua has been in two 50-50 bouts in his career and managed to lose to an absolute pudding in a 95-5. He'd probably be better off sticking to the Molinas, Takams, Breazeales, Martins, Paint Drys and Pulevs of the world. He just better ensure that he has a belt to legitimise these pudding bouts.
Okay, you would rather he stays inactive waiting for Usyk and AJ rematch winner to emerge? I'd rather he fights someone. I think every boxing fan would agree.
Obviously Robert Helenius would be unacceptable. But how about Dillian Whyte or Andy Ruiz or Joe Joyce? Would you have a problem with him fighting any of them while waiting for Usyk-AJ 2 winner?
As others here have said. The quote-unquote best should not need another tune up. He is simply trying to fight another gatekeeper or a bum instead of fighting Whyte, his mandatory. Then after Usyk and AJ fight, Fury and his team will scream that a unification trumps a mandatory. Effectively ducking the mandatory. This is why I have called Fury a con man and a fraud. But he has fooled a lot of you into actually supporting him ducking Whyte which is insanity. If he loses the WBC belt either by thrashing it or by getting stripped, it's not good business, it's ducking. No other way to put it. Yet again, Arum and Fury will convince a lot of you that he is somehow bigger than the belt. Even though he has only 1 title defense. The worst part of this is, you cannot even debate with a lot of guys because Fury is such a skilled con man that many of you believed he had covid last summer even though he was in public a couple days later with no mask on haha. Same guys who believed he donated his entire purse to charity too.
He had a few tune ups before the first Wilder fight, having not fought for two years. Surely you can understand, him not jumping in with Wilder after a two year bender? He then had another couple of tune ups, before giving Wilder the biggest battering of his life. Tune ups are there for a reason, especially in the heavyweight division.
Whyte is a tune up. He should fight Whyte. But there seems to be an issue surrounding money. Whyte turns down millions. Fighting Usyk AJ winner does trump fighting Whyte. Every boxing fan knows that, so I don't know what you're talking about. What fans want is for Fury to fight someone around the same time as Usyk and AJ fight, and for the winners to fight each other a few months after that. What fans want is an acceptable opponent for Fury to fight that tune up. Whyte fits the bill. But if Whyte wants to **** around demanding silly money or suing the WBC, Fury should probably fight someone else, someone acceptable. Opinions will differ on who is or isn't acceptable, but I think it is fairly unanimous that Helenius isn't.
Good post. That’s basically my stance. I’d like to see the Whyte fight, especially if in the UK, but if there’s too much squabbling about money which risks lots of delays he needs to fight someone else around the time of Usyk / Joshua. Helenius isn’t acceptable - someone like Ruiz is a bit better and there’s the Joshua narrative too.
