Fury (Wlad fight) Vs. Usyk (Fury fight)

Fury didn't fight for 3 years, balloned up in weight and was 28 stone at some stage

No other fighter was as great after 3 years off, especially when abusing the body

I think that version Fury beats this usyk, but to be fair, usyk is 37, so he is past it too, so it doesn't matter

I will go Fury points, because it's clear he's not lived the life of a fighter and nobody can be at their peak after what he did

Usyk is smaller and older, but he has lived the boxing life

That version of Fury gets unduly mythologized; most people forget Fury's form h2h was hardly that of some immortal ATG heading in. He wasn't far removed from some pretty poor performances (hurt by Joey Abell, gift over Cunningham).

Wlad got in his own head and defeated himself, really. Fury did well to soundly outbox the gunshy version of Wlad that was put in front of him, but people retroactively crediting him with beating the best possible Dr. Steelhammer are a bit out of touch with reality. It wasn't that Klitschko was shot per se (as shown when he went to was with Joshua) but that he was already infected with self-doubt and then completely thrown for a loop by Fury's awkward style, and basically shat the bed and gave the fight away.

I actually give Fury more credit than most people do for that victory. Even though Wlad was old, he wasn't ancient for a HW. And he's always been gun shy and filled with self doubt. Ever since he got thrashed by Corrie Sanders and Brewster he's been a grabbing, negative octopus. Jab, grab, hump, muck it up, then massive right hander or left hook and it's over. Basically, that's what Wlad did for a decade. Meh. It worked for him so can't disupte the effectiveness. Take away his height and size advantage and he didn't know what to do against Fury. It was always going to be a bad styles matchup for Wlad because the jab, grab and hump wouldn't work against Fury's height and movement.

 

Yes I think a lot of people forget that fight was a great example of timing in boxing. Fury didn't really school Wlad, he just beat an ageing fighter who was on the decline. Credit to Fury for a very good performance but that fight was all about timing. Yes he probably got inside Wlads head, but Wlad had personal issues going into the fight on the back of a previous bad performance (Jennings). It was his 68th pro fight after 19 years from turning over from a successful amateur career winning Olympic Gold.

That fight was all about timing. Countless examples of this happening in boxing history.

yes, fury won that fight against wlad. but people forget that it was one of the most BORING heavy title fights in history. fury did not smash wlad or anything to make a statement. he only threw and landed more punches. neither man hurt one another, AT ALL. so, it says something that fury pissed on the rematch and took himself off the map for three years. and if you were to have a time machine and give usyk the same age as then, it would still be a good fight between the two of them.

 

And Fury knew it and ducked the rematch.

 

Fury by points. His style and technique has suffered under Sugar Hill imo.

 

Depends on what you'd consider a prime Fury/Usyk.

 

obviously Fury 2015 would win considering he only lost by a point.

 

I think the 27-year-old version of Fury who had fast hands and was light on his feet whilst retaining his massive size advantage would be too much for the 37-year-old version of Usyk. I suspect that version would have won a decision quite comfortably tbh (and possibly eeks out a decision against prime-Usyk, too). But, this is just fantasy, and that version of Fury existed for all of 12 to 18 months before self-destructing. When they finally met, in reality, for all the marbles, Fury lost.
