Really was Ortiz ever a title holder?

Yes and he give Joshua a rough night and bloodied his nose the same Joshua who looked great in stopping Wallin tonight, Wilder destroyed Helenius and most had Wilder the favourite over Joshua based on this.

So all these people saying "Wilder looked shot" why wern't these excuses being made then ? why would a "shot" Wilder be a massive favourite over Joshua in the eyes of most people on this forum ?

Ali had Parkinsons and had 60+ fights and had been fighting world class opposition for 18 years and had been in countless wars.

Incorrect. Anybody who watched Waldo vs Jennings could clearly see Kiltschko was there for the taking. He wasn't stumbling about shot but he went from a 10/10 fighter to a 7/10 fighter pretty quickly. Being over 40 does that.

    Apologies

Apparently it was reported Whyte turned down a chance to fight Ortiz prior to this.

However both Whyte and Hearn stated Ortiz was offered Whyte the fight but Ortiz chose Allen whilst he was with matchroom after his poor display against Malik scott (only 2 fights Ortiz had under Matchroom).

I was not one of them.

A lot of folks are of the opinion, btw, that Helenius took a dive in the 1st when he fought Wilder. I'm still on the fence about it.

Lets not forget the narrative wilder beats anybody not named fury , wallin beats joshua and wilder destroys bodybuilder and Fury will toy with Nganou.

And yes wlad was shot when he fought drug cheat Fury

I guarantee you 90 percent of this forum had Wilder a considerable favourite over Joshua before tonight. Which doesn't really make sense with all the excuses now for Wilder.

Ok, now I've got it. No question Whyte would be a higher risk than Allen...and he was leaving Matchroom anyhow.

I was disappointed that Ortiz didn't track down the cowardly Malik Scott and dispose of him, but he did succeed in dribbling him like a basketball (lots of knockdowns) and beating him by about the widest decision I can ever remember.

I remember posting on that evening that I thought AJ probably had slight edge because of Wilder's advancing years and inactivity. I don't think Wilder's inactivity played any role tonight, though.

But your recollection of the prevailing opinion concerning their relative chances agrees with my own.

When we're talking past prime, what was Ortiz? 40?

He was slow as molasses anyhow and gassed early. Still he had Wilder nearly out in the first and might have finished the job if not for the ref, and was sweeping the rounds much like Parker tonight until he got caught in the rematch. If he had been Parker's age the result might very well have been the same.

Yes, at 38 and after the gruelling fights with Fury, he probably isn't quite what he has been, even though he definitely has looked just this hapless before until his power bailing him out, but even at his best he was mostly smoke and mirrors. Huge power, yes, but very, very limited and protected.

They took risks with an ancient Ortiz and what they thought was a washed up Fury, but otherwise the opp was very poor. And seeing how it nearly backfired against Ortiz and did so against Fury, one could see why long before tonight.

He did get beat by an MMA fighter.

Did another one "almost" beat him, too?

I'm not gonna lie i didn't think Joshua had a performance like tonight left in him, he didn't fill me with alot of confidence in his comeback fights vs Franklin, Helenius. But he seems to have found something from somewhere and even though i'm not a fan of his it's good to see him back with some form.

I saw improvement during the Helenius fight and felt the highlight reel would give him a much needed confidence boost. You never know of course.

Yep. Didn't hear much about him being ancient and terminally damaged goods in those threads. Funny how that works.
