Both Ray Arcel and Eddie Futch trained some of the greatest champions in history. In your opinion, who was the greater trainer and why? Do you base your opinion solely on the names they trained or do you look at who they developed a fighter and the game plans they brought into the biggest fights. Vote and discuss.
Futch was the architect of Norton's win over Ali. Holmes has said Eddie really knew his stuff, and of course both he and Arcel worked for Larry at the same time. I tend to go with Futch, who remained active in the sport while Ray took a hiatus of a couple decades before coming back with Peppermint Frazer against Locche. Therefore, although Arcel goes back earlier in the sport's history, it could be argued that Eddie ultimately accrued the greater experience. Listening to the two of them talk, I got the sense that Futch knew more.
I just posted this as my deciding factor in this same thread at bscene history section. It seems, and I may be wrong, that Futch was the better strategist with the lesser talent.
I think he was, although Arcel's plan for dethroning Locche with Frazer was clever enough. Eddie would have been an articulate and informative broadcast analyst, but it was Dundee and Clancy who indulged in television commentary.
I don't know if we can say one was better than the other. How are you measuring it ? I always think of Ray Arcel as the epitome of a boxing trainer, but there were other great masters before him and after him. He was an expert at conditioning a fighter, and worked with so many champions and contenders it would be almost impossible to name them all. Futch - and others - may well be his "equal" though, but I don't know how that's measured.
Im not really measuring it, just looking for opinions. Im not against Arcel at all and have no problem with anyone puting him over Futch. Myself, I lean towards Futch based on the the game plan he set up for Norton to beat arguably the greatest heavyweight ever. But thats just MY opinion. :good
Both were great, Ray Arcel was brilliant and so was Futch....Ray was old school taught and so was Futch...Ray went back further and brought that perspective but Eddie also had depth
