Boxings a fickle sport. As we seen over the weekend with Froch Abraham. On friday According to many Abraham was a wrecking machine who was gonna blow most of the SMWs away and had an excellent chance of being an ATG. By saturday he was an over-rated one trick pony who should move down to middleweight or become a gatekeeper. Who else has this happened too? Taylor. Lacy. Pavlik. Williams.
neither of those guys were future atg, its they have the potential to be. If some one is a talent and could become a future atg but gets destroyed in a fight and after that his carreer turns to ****, then he was just overhyped. See Lacy for example. On the other hand if he has great wins a few losing fights don´t hurt. Lets take khan for example a guy who has ATG potential, if he ebats maidana he will get closer towards this, If maidana ko him tfo we will all say he was overrated. On the other hand a atg like pacquiao can be knocked out by mosley in round 1 next fight and stil be considered a atg because off what he has already done, thats why only a few each decade become atg.
im not trying to say that they are bums, im using examples of how general opinion can radically change due to one fight. I was astounded at how many people turned on Abraham and i cant remember many saying he was terrible before the fight
fair enough. i thought AA would win saturday, but i also said he was very raw and he was on borrowed time. having a top KO reel and beating miranda with a broken jaw definitely helped to add to his appeal. people gravitate towards action fighters.
In my opinion (and only in my opinion) AA is limited but would be still very effective in what he can do, if (and that's the point) he would be the fighter he used to be in the past. Last Saturday it was obvious that he was scared to open up and to take risks. I thought he's a tough guy but he disappointed big time. He has no choice - either he changes his mindset and is willing to take risks and to trade punches or he should retire, because he can't go back to 160 (he can't make the weight). Still, AA is one of my fav fighters, but I was very surprised about what happened last Saturday. If he would've lost on points against Froch - ok, this can happen, because Froch is tough. But the way it happened is the decisive factor. AA was slaughtered, unable to do anything. And that's not only a matter of style, it's also a matter of will and toughness. His coach should also question himself, because AA's style hasn't changed for years. There's no improvement.
