H2H, the best four featherweights of the past four decades.

If they were in a mini-league where they had to fight each other once, who would emerge as the top dog?

The more detailed the answer the better, but all comments welcome! :good

    :bbb

PS: Of course Jofre has a case to be the best feather of the 70s, but I think Arguello was a better fighter p4p and more people know more about him than Jofre, so I've chosen him for this thread.

PPS: I am a MONSTER Pacquiao fan and I think he is a greater fighter than Marquez now, but Manny hadn't yet matured into the elite fighter he is now when he was at featherweight. IMO Marquez got the better of him in their 1st fight and was the more complete featherweight back then.

I'd take Sanchez to outbox Arguello at Featherweight, though there would be plenty of rough patches, particularly down the stretch.

In a way, yes, Marquez got the better of Pac in their first fight. He kept his FW title by getting a draw thru a scoring error.:yep

I think Arguello was a better SFW/LW than he was FW.

I'd pick Sanchez to beat Arguello on PTS at FW, though Alexis' power would've been a serious problem for Sanchez (great chin and all)

    In 12 round fights!

    Arguello W PTS Hamed

    Sanchez W PTS Marquez

    Sanchez vs. Arguello DRAW

Morales & Barrera were better FWTs than Hamed & Marquez IMO, assuming you are talking their absolute peaks for the weight class.

Morales of the Ayala fight & Barrera of the Naz fight were better than ANY version of Hamed & JMM at 126.

Anyway - on to the tourney.

Salvador Sanchez wins this tournament, Arguello wasnt as good at 126 as he was at 130, possibly the best ever at 130.

Hamed v JMM = Marquez SD.
Hamed v Arguello = Arguello 10th rd TKO.
Hamed v Sanchez = Sanchez UD.
JMM v Arguello = Arguello 12 rd KO.
JMM v Sanchez = Sanchez UD.
Final - Arguello v Sanchez = Sanchez MD.

    Winner = Salvador Sanchez.

Ps. The proposed fight between SS & AA was gonna be at 135 were Arguello had just moulded into fine, Sal was gonna have to jump 2 weights & I think that would cost him the win in a points loss to Arguello.
130 - if Sal could handle the weight & perform exactly as he did at 126 - would have been an ATG fight between AA & SS, that one is a 50/50 fight IMO.

    Very good post.

I believe Alexis to be the greatest 130 of all time....people say Floyd is (H2H) but I think his more aggressive style at the weight would've set him up for one of Arguello's famous combos....and we know what happened when Alexis landed them (especially at 130)

I hear what you're saying mate, but I've been making these threads called 'Best of each Decade' or 'Decade's Best' for a while now, so I limit myself to choosing the best fighter h2h at the weight from each decade, ie one from the 70s, one from the 80s, one from the 90s, one from the 00s, so Barrera and Morales can't be considered for the 90s, thus leaving Hamed as the only real choice.

I obviously can't have Morales as the best feather h2h of the 00s because Barrera proved to be better h2h by beating him, he beat him the same year as Erik's win over Ayala, so for me that rules Erik out.

Would the JMM of the 1st Pac fight beat the MAB of the Naz fight? I genuinely can't decide. I went with JMM as my choice because he was a natural feather and had a longer career there, and IMO Pac has always been a better fighter than Naz, but I accept Barrera '01 would have been every bit as valid a choice (however, Barrera already beat Naz at fw, so it wouldn't have made for as good a hypothetical h2h contest, would it?)

Cheers for your analysis of the thread-subject though, v good post as yours always are on this subject-matter :good

Must be a Hamed Nuthugger who posted this. MAB and Morrales were both better FW's tha Hamed. Hamed should not be in this post. Alexis would beat thenm all.

Hamed was the best feather of the 90's however...Neither Morales or MAB fought at 126 until after 2000.

Thats the point of the thread.

Dinamita, dont waste your time with people that dont take the time to understand the thread.

In response as to who I believe would win the Sanchez - Arguello fight, I said it's a pick 'em. Honestly I think Sanchez wins a decision but it's really splitting hairs.

If those 2 fought 10 times, they'd probably win 5 each or 6 to Sanchez.

In the end, Sanchez's counterpunching wins the day. He was so damn sharp!

Sanchez is my favorite fighter of all time and Arguello is in my top 10.
