Gerald McClellan. How does everyone rate him?. This question is based purely in the ring, not intrested in the stories outside. How do you think he would have faired against Jones Jr, Toney and the like?. IMO he would have been one of the greats of our era. Awesome power, great chin, solid skills, brutal finisher(left hook to the body and straight right were monsterous). Whats your thoughts? [yt]Bz4KWIP3mrQ[/yt]
i take the brendan ingle line that he could have been one of the all time greats. i rate him that highly. an absolute monster .
He was a tremendous fighter, a beast. Tall, fast, extremely powerful, tough and fierce. Guys did not want to fight him, which is one reason I give Benn credit for taking the bout and fighting as hard as he did (notwithstanding the tragic circumstances). He could have been a true legend, for the right reasons.
imagine how much that punch to the back of jacksons head as he was going down would have hurt!!!:scaredas: he did similar to benn as he was going out of the ring, snapped his neck ligaments apparently. how on earth did benn come back after that ?
He was an excellent puncher and a world class talent. I feel due to the tradegy though that his overral ability gets overrated...
disagree with this mate. you get flamed on here for daring to suggest anyone could have beaten a prime jones but if anyone could, thats the man.
he'd become power happy in his last few fights. his stamina was questionable and his defence below average. if he'd of got past benn, RJJ would have probably finished him for good providing gerald got past his medical.
He was a big puncher, decent boxing skills, solid chin. I don't think he was going to be an ATG though. Barring HWs, most big punchers who become real greats have a lot more to their game as well. McClellan had alright skills but I didn't see an ATG in the making.
What seems to have been lost in the whole thing is that Benn got on top of him and essentially won the fight - regardless of the tragic events afterwards. Now Benn is a good fighter but he wasn't an ATG so draw your own conclusions.
no he wasn't but he wasn't far off and that performance was an all time great one. sometimes a fighter pulls something special out of the bag and digs something out of himself that is a one-off. that was what happened that night . plus many an all time great has been beaten , to lesser men than nigel benn, doesnt change the fact they're an ATG . note also that we're saying could have been. he was still fairly young . 29 or so ?
A great offensive fighter. Good power and nice skills but his defense was a bit open imo. Eubank would've given him fits as well.
