Roy Gano Nagulman vs. Angelito Chapito Rivera Merin, 10 round @ bantamweight

 

This is for the interim Philippines Boxing Federation bantamweight title.

Strangely, a vacant PBF 118lb title contest was just fought a week ago, won by Joseph Ambo, who is still listed as the champ.

 

"Pretty Boy Roy" is only 17 years old.

"The Matrix" is eleven years his senior.

 

Round 1

Nagulman is circling to his left, popping the jab. Merin comes flying at him with a 1-2, simultaneously picked off and sidestepped. Nagulman is countering nicely with straight rights & check hooks as Merin dives after him repeatedly. Merin tries muscling Nagulman into a corner and whipping roundhouse into both sides of his rib cage. HUGE counter 1-2 on the button executed by Nagulman while nimbly pivoting free puts Merin down, hard. Merin is up but shaken, less overtly ballistic and reckless with his aggression now. They circle at mid-range and Merin lobs some high jabs into the guard and probing rights on the belt line. Nagulman slaps out some long counter left hooks while circling with his back kissing the ropes. Lead rights by Merin from outside, falling short. Merin throws one at the body diving in, a ruse, shoeshine-feinting at the the belly and then bringing a big left hook up top and connecting on the chin of Nagulman once inside. Nagulman shakes it off and circles away.

Round 2

Nagulman is catching jabs and countering with long swooping right uppercuts galloping in from outside. Merin is starting to time him with well turned over left hooks. Nagulman showing a good chin as Merin connects flush a few times. Merin getting bolder now, running in to initiate exchanges, viciously hooking to body and head; Nagulman takes a step back, lining up a big counter 3-2, which shakes Merin visibly, but he keeps pressing in undeterred... Nagulman once more puts together a hook and cross - and with the latter FLATTENS MERIN, PRONE & MOTIONLESS ON THE CANVAS, THUNDEROUS SHOT, MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KO2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

Oh man, now I need to Google whether or not Merin's okay..

Stretcher was brought out immediately before the crowd had even stopped its whooping roar and the ring announcer made it official..

 

Absolutely the number one knockout of the year so far with a bullet, and even with 9+ months left I can't imagine anything will displace it. This was as insanely as I've ever seen a person get one-shotted.

I just really hope Angelito is okay.

 

Oh man, thankfully he got up and sat on a stool after like four minutes. That was scary but seems like he was responsive and fairly alert (if not exactly in a great mood) while they awarded his conqueror with the strap.

Generally the GAB is a very good commission, I'm sure if there was any concern about Merin's health they would have taken it seriously.

Y'all seriously need to see what this kid just did.

 

The actual knockout is about five minutes and thirty seconds into the video if you're in a hurry, but the first round is a good watch, too.

 

I watched this at the library with headphones in and the volume seemed reasonable until Roy landed the kibosh and the crowd just ERUPTED, that must have been such an intense atmosphere to be a part of, I don't think I've ever heard a reaction like that attending live fights.

I think I'm partly deaf now. Worth it.
