Shocker: Campbell stuns Cayo

By Robert Coster
“Old warriors never die” the saying goes and it was certainly true Saturday night for former world champion Nate Campbell as he pulled out an upset ninth round TKO victory over local favorite IBF #6 jr welterweight Victor “Mermelade” Cayo in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Campbell (35-9-1, 26 KOs), a battle-scarred 40-year-old who had lost four of his last five fights, was considered a fairly safe opponent for Cayo (27-3, 19 KOs) and it certainly appeared to be so in the first four rounds with the young Dominican playing torreador to Campbell’s bull. The old, self-styled “Galaxy Warrior” was constantly being beaten to the punch by Cayo and it even seemed that referee Roberto Ramirez might even stop the fight. Then, in the fifth round, occured the dramatic turnabout. One of Campbell’s wild, desperate looping right hands landed flush on Cayo’s jaw. Victor fell to the mat with such force that it looked like he might not get up but he did. A suddenly fired-up Campbell went for the kill and the local fighter was again knocked down. Cayo miraculously survived the round but the rounds that followed were pure hell, as Nate just poured it on, punishing the Dominican boxer with body shots, uppercuts and his trademark looping rights. A succesion of punches left Cayo completely dazed on his feet in the ninth round and referee Ramirez wisely decided to call off the carnage. A real stunner.
