Too bad Galento and an aging Shannon Briggs didn't coexist.

He said that tall fighters like "6'7, 6'8" were the best easiest for him to beat because be they offered alot of target. I think Galento would have thought he could beat Lennox Lewis or Wladimir Klitchsko

I do think Galento could have beaten 6'9" Ed Jones in a Two Ton vs. Too Tall showdown though. :)

Galento traded on being rude and uncouth in the way Foreman later traded on being a jolly hamburger munching preacher. that was his shtick. But the guy could really fight.

I’ve listened to the radio broadcast of Galento v Nova and let me tell you, there were no complaints of fouling from the commentary, or boos from the audience or even complaining from Lou or his team in the radio interviews. It sounded like a competitive, fast paced fight and was reported as such. In fact the referee was said to have done a fine job and broke the clinches quickly.

Nova was knocked down by punches in in the third round, twice in round eight and twice in round 14. There was infighting, only two refrances to Galento heeling nova. both were cut. Galento on the lip, the chin area and ear. Nova had a closed right eye and a cut left eye.

Galento was staggered badly himself in round five but surprised everyone with his power and stamina to out work a better boxer like Lou Nova.

“Tough fight. One of the toughest fights I have ever had. Tony is a great fighter and a good tough man. I have no excuses” -Lou Nova.

when you look at Jimmy, he looks very ordinary, and cant seem to punch. Very boring, and clinches excessively

but who can argue with his success?

Patterson was okay but a little small

Jimmy was small too but unlike Floyd, he knew how to deal with big guys like Ali, Norton, Foreman, and Lyle

Yes I was surprised when I listened to it.

To think people went round making stuff like that up? Some very biased reporting after that fight which dosnt corespond with the broadcast at all.

I guess boxing is a business and they had to try and sell Lou Nova off the back of a hard loss. And it worked too because nova got a shot at and beat Pat Comiskey and Max Baer (again) to land a title fight where Lou was given a better chance of beating Joe Louis than nearly all other challengers.

Galento legitimately beat a very good fighter who was as good before and after losing to Tony.

Yeah, if it was any more x-rated than what was considered acceptable for the day then there was no real complaint at the time was there?

One guy from Ring magazine even wrote- “One of the most disgraceful fights staged since the days of the barroom brawls. Referee George Blake . . . would have retained his reputation as a great referee had he disqualified Galento." (The Ring, December 1939, page 16)“

-which is the opposite of the praise the radio commentary gave the referee on the live broadcast and of Novas opinion of Tony on the night since he called galento “a great fighter and a good tough man”.

As you said I recon there would have been some. But no more than what Galento used in film against joe Louis and Max Baer. Things were pretty rough.

Perhaps, but if Ingo could hit him Flush with the bingo and Sonny (in his own words, hit him harder than he'd hit anyone) Floyd would have got up and turned Galento into an 'up-down-up-down' frigging embarrassment!

Oh I'd back Patterson all the way. However, I think Galento may have been a tougher opponent for Patterson than given credit for. But Patterson is the clear favorite here.

Galanto a uncouth, fat, gobsite who was willing to use 'any advantage' he could gain to win a fight, but he sure as hell gave it his best shot in the squared circle, and i for one would be happy to have him on my side in a bar room brawl, ok Galento likely would have started the brawl in the first place, but there you go.

There’s a classic interview with Rocky Marciano and Jackie Gleason, where Jackie tells the story of a little, fat bald guy heckling him at a night club. Jackie doesn’t know who he is and tells the guy to meet outside. Gleason says he never saw a guy get up so fast. Jackie starts to say something and gets knocked out. When he comes to he asks the club owner who that was and the owner tells him it was Two Ton Tony Galento.
Rocky then says that Galento was the roughest, toughest street fighter around.
