He's not a once ina 20 years talent. Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley, and RJJ are all arguably more talented than Gamboa.
Ive seen Roy's pro debut and right there became a fan. Totally dominating an opponent and almost not letting the opponent to land a clean punch. Gamboa is not on RJJ's talent but im still a Fan of the Guy. A real future World/Superstar Champion.
DLH sn't exactly "20 year" talent now is he? As for Pernell, anyone stating to be a fan of his should know a little better than this. I assume you're talking Rafael Williams right? The guy who knocked Pernell down in the fourth round of their fight ( Pernell's 9th ever fight ) Rafael Williams at that point in his career had only previously lost to Livingstone Bramble and Hector Camacho, who I'm sure I don't need to tell you about, being that you masturbate every day to olden era fight tapes. Williams had also contested at 'continental' level in terms of titles, he was WELL above Jimenez in both career progression and also experience against top tier fighters. But don't let fact get in your way - you never seem too. Now, go to bed, little man.
I only added arguably because of Mosley. Mayweather and Jones are definately more talented. However, you can't be a once in 20 year tealent if there are multiple fighters in the last 20 years that are more talented than you. Gamboa has great speed, reflexes, and overall athleticsim. However, he's not very precise with his punches, I question his stamina, and he doesn't seem too interested in defense. I'm not too sure yet what to make of this guy yet. He could end up being the next Mosley or the next Judah(not too bad either way).
No way dude. Judah is as mentally weak as they come, which definitely isn't Yuri. And why would anyone in their right mind question his stamina? In the 10th round he threw straight combos for about a minute.....followed by more after. Over 800 in 10 rounds, and I never even saw him breath through his mouth
I think Gamboa is an upset waiting to happen ... he has bad habits and will not tighten up out of the blue ... you see he got knocked down against a guy that had no business last 10 rounds with him ... this guy wasn't a tough hard headed guy ... Gamboa still didn't keep his hands up despite the knock down ... how funny is that ... What will this guy do in a championship fight? ... i'm sure he's not going to keep them hands up. I don't care who the prospect is ... no prospect is going to let a guy get any confidence fighting and him and won't let him get a knockdown on him. I'm sorry but at 26 and having over 400 amateur fights, I don't see any room for improvement ... this hype job is going to get KO'd very soon - especially when he takes that step up in class.
My thoughts are, heres a 26 yr old man who for the last 6 years had been fighting amateurs that were around the 17-21 yr old age.. probably not used to being in with other men who pack a punch and thinks he can wear shots at no detriment.
Seems like you are implying that I think he is unbeatable, which is completely wrong. He loses to a handful of top guys right now. If his natural progression continues and he learns to keep those hands up a bit he is for certain p4p material though
I say he could end up like Judah in the sense that he would become a supremely athletic boxer who achieved some good things but came up short too many times. I question Yuri's stamina due to the fact that he didn't have a whole lot of snap on his punches in the later stages of the fight.
Agree, think this guy is a little too old by professional standards to start ironing out deficiencies in his technique. Could be proven wrong, Bernard Hopkins evolved throughout his career, but you got to remember, Bernard had massive respect for his trainer Bouie Fischer and that no doubt contributed to his ability to learn. I don't know if Gamboa will respect his trainers, he may think the guy who taught him the game as an amateur is the only guy worth listening too.
