When unbeaten super featherweight phenomenon Yuriorkis Gamboa (9-0-0, 8 kos) steps into the ring against Darling Jimenez (23-2-2, 14 kos) this Saturday (May 17th) in Primm, Nevada, it will not only be the HBO debut of the Cuban Olympic gold medallist, but also his chance to win the WBC international championship. The title had been laid down by none other than Phillipinian superstar Manny Pacquiao before “Pacman” stripped the world title from Juan Manuel Marquez on March 15th.

“Of course, it is a great honour to fight for this belt”, states Gamboa. “Especially as this in only my tenth professional fight. I am glad that my performances so far have convinced the sanctioning bodies to put me very high in the ratings and

At the moment Gamboa is rated on No. 3 in the WBA and on No. 4 in the WBC world rankings..

And that is what I will do. After winning the WBC international title I will try to get my hands on the belt Pacquiao’s wearing right now. Though I hope that he doesn’t put it down so I will have the chance to take it from him in the ring.”

I take no issue with this. He has a ton of experience, is not a youngster and realizes that he has to get going faster than others. It is not unprecedented.

I'm quite sure that these are the words of the one who wrote the press release. That's how they write these press releases nowadays...

Anyways, it's good to hear some strong words. Being as furious inside the ring as he is, having the excitement of a Cotto outside would be just horrible...

"I'm not thinking about the fact that Pacquiao held this title before. I'm not thinking about Pacquiao as well. Hopefull he vacates so I don't have to fight him. I'm not the best boxer in the world and I'm not ready to prove that."

    Just hype?

He says he is proving to be the best by beating Jimenez, who is the best. He says he is trying to prove to be the best fighter in the world by fighting a C level guy and then he's saying Pacquiao would duck him if he didn't fight him in future? That's not hype! That's delusional madness or just a laughable stunt...Froch comes to mind...:-(

That is NOT what he said.

He isn't saying that fighting Jimenez makes him the best, just saying he knows he's a tough test but he is willing to fight anyone.

And he isn't saying Pacquiao would be ducking him by dropping the belt. He is clearly pointing out that Pacquiao plans on a permanent move up, but he hopes to get to Pacquiao before that decision is made.

    Thank you.

Decebal, let's remember when Antonio Tarver berated Roy Jones in the post-fight PC after Ruiz. Tarver was crude and obnoxious, talking all sorts of outlandish bull****.

Was he actually trying to convince anyone that he's great? No. Was he trying to get the fight -- and career payday -- against Jones? Yes.

Same with Gamboa. He's talking big to pressure the Pac fight or a different big fight. It is age-old tradition and you'd better learn to accept it.

If he is willing to fight anyone and he is gunning for Pacquiao, why is he not fighting a B+ or at least B- level fighter? :huh

His promoter has enough money to buy him a Bentley and give him millions of dollars yet cannot attract a decent opponent to the table?

    Come on!

I realize English isn't your first language (nor is it Gamboa's), but I read his statement to mean that to be the best, you have to beat the best, so when he beats PACQUIAO (after Jimenez) he will be the best.

Yes. This is what he must have meant. I agree; he's pulling a Froch.

Please don't use Decebal's ESB account/computer Mr.! He'd never start a thread regarding a prefabricated, weekend-fight advertizing, written-by-Arena-press-team, typical and cliche press release.
