He would not starch Linares in 3 rounds. I figure you'd be a little less hasty after tonight when you hinted that he'd starch Jimenez within 2. I am still very much on board though, he continues to prove himself to me.
Linares has actually shown shaky chin qualities, is slow as hell and has a poor defence and inexperience. Gamboa would swarm him and he would freeze up as usual, it's not like he's got an iron jaw like this Jimenez, who's never been down before. Linares is not in this class, better stay at 126.
Gamboa is significantly more gifted than Linares, I don't see any comparison to make. Gamboa has some amazing physical gifts. He is a rough diamond at the moment, but just takes a bit of polishing and he'll be something incredible Linares is just good, and has no chance to reach the same kind of level, even if he improves things. There is a difference in class.
Since when is Linares' chin proven rock solid? The guy freezes up when a high workrate is thrown at him.
I saw it in another thread that part of what makes Gamboa so exciting as that he could get knocked out at any time and I agree with that. I'm still a boxing newbee but I thought the entire night was a good night for HBO and showcased some nice young prospects. Gamboa, to me, it almost seems like he boxes like he's playing basketball. He hangs those arms so low and brings them out, I was half expecting him to cross the dude over and then hit him with a spin move before a left hook or something. Still, exciting boxer and given that he's bringing his hands up from his knees almost everytime, I think he's got excellent hand speed. He's also quite athletic all around and impressive from that aspect.
I picked the decision too I thought a few of his flaws might show up tonight against a guy like Jimenez, but its no big deal really. Fine tuning is needed defensively, and a slight shift in mentality against better class.
Look, I think Gamboa is outstanding. I think that the YOUNGER Linares shows more promise and has been more impressive on the big stage. I look forward to a showdown.
Gamboa hasn't even begun to fight on the big stage... And Linares being younger doesn't really mean much. Gmaboa's only had 10 fights. "Oh yeah, he had heaps of amateur fights". So what? So did many many of the fighters who we call great today. And they weren't fighting a champion after 10 fights. So :conf
Combine record of Linares' first 10 opponents. 134-60-15 Gamboa's first 10. 169-31-8 He has fought MUCH higher competition at this point in their careers. Plus, Linares has fought 15 more fights....give Gamboa his time to fully develop his pro game. And any idiot saying someone has a shaky/glass chin because of ONE KD or was exposed in a fight where he won 9 out of 10 rounds vs a good fighter is a ****in idiot. No qualms about it. Sorry to be so frank...but...
And suffered a knockdown against Darling Jiminez. He kept his hands low all night long, threw Jiminez to the ground, acted like some kind of hot-shot. Gamboa needs a boxing lesson- and Linares will give it to him.
Gamboa's career is on an extremely short leash. He's got about 5-6 years of his prime left, perhaps even fewer than that due to his dynamic and reckless style.
