There are strong rumors that Cuban Interim Champ ( or Regular Champ, who knows! ) Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8 KOs) could return on October 13 to defend his WBA crown against unbeaten Sharif Bogere (23-0, 15 KOs) in Las Vegas.

It would be April’s first fight since losing a highly controversial and despicable split decision loss against former champion Brandon Rios in April. The WBA officially announced that Abril would be allowed to keep his interim title, despite the loss to Rios, who didn’t make weight for the fight.

Abril was later elevated to WBA regular champion but it's hard to say at the moment if he is the Regular Champ or the Interim. Previously it was thought that April would be defending against Gavin Rees, who is now being mentioned as a possible opponent for former WBA-IBF World Champion and 2004 Olympic Gold medalist, Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa.

I myself being Cuban wouldn't want to see a Cuba vs Cuba match but hey if it has to happen then I am all for it. If Abril beats Bogere and Gamboa beats Rees then it's very possible that these two Cuban combatants meet!

This is a very unusual thing as we hardly get to see two Cubans battling each other in the pros, ( because there aren't too many Cubans here ). I think while Abril is a great defensive and skilled fighter Gamboa whips him with ease. Then Rios will be taking notes and will be relieved that he never fought Gamboa.

    Opinions?

    :good

He's not beating bogere, but bogere vs gamboa would be great, because bogere is the real deal and i'm happy he's getting a shot, the guy fought 9 times last year and has a win over beltran.

Dont count Abril out in any fight. With fair scoring he is very hard to beat and even harder to look impressive against.

IF Abril keeps Gamboa at a distance and not get countered, Abril. But if he fights defensive even on the inside Gamboa can rough him up. Abril he's a complete fighter man he can beat anyone from 135-147 he's crafty enough and has the size to do it. I pick Abril, but he could be robbed, tho Gamboas not with Arum so if it goes the distance Abril to score another upset. Probably most underrated fighter today. I'd love to see him rematch Lundy and Prescott.

Interesting posts, like Mexicano said never count Abril out. He is very underrated, has tons of experience as an amateur in Cuba and showed that he can beat anyone ( Rios match ).

But Gamboa is a completely different beast who brings lighting speed, KO power, superb athleticism and unmatched amateur accomplishments. Logic says Gamboa beats him with ease.

No way Abril beats Gamboa. Yes he may give him a pretty good challenge with his defence and patience but once Gamboa starts to land those insanely fast punches he will bring him down. One thing is to beat Rios and another Gamboa, very two different things. :-(

Gamboa hasnt even fought at lightweight yet lol. For now i got abril because he's a true lightweight, hes far taller and is a better imo in defense. And what does beating abril proved that gamboa can beat rios? Abril fought a badly dehydrated Rios. A healthy rios would have beat both abril and gamboa. This is why gamboa wanted to fight rios in the first place cause he knew rios would kill himself terribly to make weight and i would bet if rios fail to make weight like he did vs abril that gamboa would still want to fight rios. Gamboa i guess was trying to follow pac play book of moving up 2 weight class to fight fighters that look like zombies of killing themself to make weight (Oscar/Rios).
