With Hasegawa leaving one stacked division for another (126) and with it being likely that this fight will never happen....how do you guys think the fight would go?
I like Hasegawa but I think Gamboa takes him. Gamboa is certainly stronger, rehydrating to 140, and combination hand speed is faster.
Hasegawa will rehydrate to near that. He walked around at like 135 ish when he was fighting at 118. Anyway, I think Gamboa takes it, but Hasegawa has a chance if he isn't caught properly. He doesn't have a glass chin and he does have a bit of pop, but doesn't need it so much because he places his punches so well. The fight could well happen if Hasegawa wins the WBC title which he fights for later this year. Still unlikely tho.
That's a heartbreaker fight for me, and Hasegawa-Montiel was pretty tough already... I say let's just wait how Hozumi handles Burgos first, but I'd imagine Gamboa would be just too strong, though with Hasegawa's speed and sharp-shooting, I definitely see him setting up his left hook and Yuri doesn't seem to be very alert for that shot (which is why I think JuanMa has a good chance of winning). Having a crisp jab instead of the one he uses could increase Hozumi's chances.
Gamboa's angles and speed would make it tough for Hasegawa, however given that Hasegawa is a very accurate counter puncher, and that Gamboa likes to admire his work, drop his hands after throwing, its not out of the question that Hasegawa could win, however I think Gamboa's relaxed, more fluid style would allow him to get off more consistently against the technically sound, albeit slight stiffer Hasegawa, then again there is another element to it, Hasegawa is a southpaw, so Gamboa might have to apply the pressure and throw combination's to get some change out of him, which would enhance Hasegawa's chances cause he could play counter puncher, plus, Gamboa does have a tendency to get wide and square when he lets combination's go, he always leaves his chin in the air to. Gamboa if he fought a disciplined fight and does not get sloppy, ALA Salido fight etc.
I want to pick Hasegawa, I think he has the skills to frustrate Gamboa's offense, but I don't like his chances if he jumps up in weight and goes after Gamboa so soon if he wins against Burgos. I'm reserving judgement until I see how he does at 126.
For some reason Gamboa seems to have less trouble with southpaws than someone with an orthodox style. If Hasegawa works on keeping his lead foot on the outside and uses his right hook to counter, he could make it difficult for Gamboa to just walk in and maul him.
a little birdie told me that if caballero has an impressive performance tomorrow, he will be gamboa's mandatory next. that is inside info, not inside biased info
