Now i get the feling i might get bashed for this, but how could you see the current Gamboa do against Mayweather when he was 10W-0L (1997 version of Mayweather), where he wasen't as polished as he is now. Also note that i haven't seen much of Gamboa (only 2 fights) so don't instantly jump to conclusions that this thread was only made to overate/hype him up. Discuss...
After 10 fights, Mayweather was pretty polished. He was ready to compete for a title then and was already calling out Hernandez and Gatti. He beat the **** out of Hernandez not too long after for his first title. I'll take green Mayweather in this fight.
You'd have to pick Gamboa, given that he's physically more mature and has the more extensive amateur background. Mayweather was only 20 back then.
I'd take a green PBF over Gamboa. PBF was a beast already with just 10 fights he looked like the truth then.
This was the 10-0 Mayweather. Doesn't seem terribly green to me in comparison. [YT]WqVfaZEzqwM[/YT] [YT]pGq9zHhfKlM[/YT] [YT]FICSpgB4I70[/YT]
You have it exact. Styles make fights, and Gamboa gives away too much counterpunching-oppurtunities. Also, if you watch closely, you'll notice that Gamboa throws quite a few punches that fall just an inch or so short. I don't know if he has the greatest sense of depth. I do know that you need to be extremely sharp to land anything on Mayweather.
Wow Floyd by ko?? I think that's a bit exacerrated. Gamboa isn't a guy that you just knock out, haven't you guys seen the guy fight? I think it will be a close fight which will end in a decision for.. I don't know who Let me add that gamboa is way more experienced and mature then floyd back then.
My point was that in a match between these two, the extra tricks and moves picked up from years more boxing would be of some use. My knowledge of Floyd's early career is more limited in that I haven't seen all of his fights whereas I have seen Gamboa's. I may be wrong, but I don't think it's an entirely unreasonable call. Floyd seems tighter defensively now, I assume due to him facing bigger guys, and Gamboa has those sharp flurries. I can see Gamboa catching him more than anybody else did early in his career. It's pure speculation as to what the result would be, but I think Gamboa's certainly got a reasonable chance given that he's far above anybody Mayweather had fought at that stage of his career. Of course, the same could also be said of Gamboa.
Both are very good fighters at that stage, I favor Mayweather because he is proven, and has better technical skills.
No offense but I heavily disagree, gamboa is way more polished technique wise then Mayweather back then. Logical too if you're from Cuba and with so much experience. Even the sub-top Cubans have amazing technique.. look at Hurtado or Pablo Hernandez.
The way he: dodges punches, moves his head, side steps, pivotating, hip twist when punching, stepping back, his movement, et cetera. Everything he does he does it just better and more beautiful then Floyd, more perfect. Imo of course, but I see this difference clearly. But again, he (Gamboa) has way more experience than Floyd back then so it's understandable. NB.: A/The fighter with the more beautiful style doesn't necessarily have to win against a fighter who fights less beautiful, but more efficient.
