Supposedly press conferences before contract signing is standard practice. It's hard to tell what Gamboa was thinking, you're right that DeCubas and Oner handled the press releases. I don't think it's just TR, it's tough to promote Cubans. I think TR is doing a good job with Rigo, giving him good TV dates despite little experience, no fanbase and a non TV friendly style. No doubt they preferred Juanma to Gamboa, but that' just common sense promoting, Juanma was the next PR superstar. I'd say GBP's treatment of Lara is worse than what Gamboa/Rigo got from TR.
This is all true and I wouldn't call Top Rank's treatment of Cuban fighters irrational from their perspective or anything. The one thing that bothers me though is when people act like the big two American promotional companies can turn water into wine with any fighter regardless of nationality. They're clearly the best at promoting those with established ethnic fan bases, but fans give them far too much credit when they say talented guys lacking such fan bases and signed with smaller promoters would clearly be stars if signed with Top Rank or Golden Boy. Neither has demonstrated much in the way of interest or success in that regard.
It's been more than a yr now. Had to happen to one of boxings best young fighters and most explosive. This sucks. Wish I had a heavy bag to vent out my frustrations.... TMT isn't being fair to the fighters they still have schedules they have to maintain and yes Top Rank sucks but at least they're a company off the ground and have been so for many years. He'd be fighting at least 3 fights since his last pro ring appearance by now.
Gamboa did this to himself, from day one, he has no one but himself to blame for the decisions that he has made that have left him this inactive.
