http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3401891 --------------- Gamboa, who won a gold medal for the Cuban boxing team at the 2004 Olympic Games, had to earn his 10-round decision over Jimenez. Gamboa got too cocky and Jimenez dropped him in the fourth round, causing more than a few anxious moments in his corner. After the fight Gamboa's promoter, Ahmet Öner of Arena Boxing, fired Gamboas' trainer, Osmiri Fernandez, in the dressing room. "Gamboa knows everything about boxing. He doesn't need somebody to teach him boxing," Öner said. "He needs someone he can respect as his trainer and someone to teach him to respect his opponents. He needs someone he will listen to." Oner said they will begin a search for a new trainer. Meanwhile, Luis De Cubas, who runs the American operation for Arena Boxing, said they want to get Gamboa back in the ring on June 27. De Cubas said he had some concerns that Jimenez would be too big a step up for Gamboa. "I know Darling Jimenez is a rugged guy," De Cubas said. "This was a very big step up for him. It's not the type of fight I would want to give him with only nine fights, but when you get a chance to fight on HBO you take who they say. The cream always rises to the top. I feel like he rose to the top with his performance."
Seems very much a knee jerk reaction. Who the hell knows though.. maybe he just wants Gamboa's hands up a little more. But yeah seems like he is looking for someone to blame.
i agree, gamboa needs to keep his hands up and from what i heard durinf the fight he never told gamboa to keep his hands up maybe that was the reason.
The talent is great. If he can speak English good enough to make him understand with an English-speaking trainer, Öner should look for a big name. Of course the Mayweathers are the big names for crazy talents these day (I'd choose Floyd Sr.) but there are other ones as well...
The language aspect isn't as important as just finding a good trainer. There are always guys in gyms in places like Miami or Los Angeles that are bilingual.
WTF is that? If that's the fighter's attitude and his promoters condone it, why waste money on a top flight trainer he's just going to blow off? I'd say last night was proof he doesn't know everything about defense.
Obviously there was pre-existing tension/dislike with the trainer. The KD was just an excuse to let him go.
