Thought about this but not so sure really. These guys are on opposite ends of the world in technique. Beristain likes his guys to fight a technical style, hands up, counterounching, disciplined... Gamboa is set in his ways. I would hand him off to a trainer that can modify his athletic style by teaching him how to roll with punches or stay behind his shoulder. That guy would be Floyd Sr.
Floyd Sr. + Gamboa could be incredible, if they found a way to work together. Here's another thought. If Gamboa at 26 really is a "finished product" who already is what he is going to be, why not go the "Ozell Nelson" route and fish around in the Cuban system for someone he's comfortable working with?
Thing is he needs to learn more defense, I don't see anyone better than Mayweather sr. And this being oscar's last year, he should take him on as Gamboa being such a big up and coming fighter.
It is always easy to blame the coach. After 400 fights, Gamboa is the way he is. Changing coaches ain't gonna do a damn thing.
Gamboa... you need to keep your hands up.... THROW MORE PUNCHES TO THE BODY BABY~!! He need that guy... bring Buddy in...
No matter who trains Gamboa, at 28 yrs old, and over 400 amateur fights under his belt ... the room for improvement is very small. He needs to develop some consistancy and some discipline ... he's a good fighter but I don't see his undefeated streak last for too long ... He's like an orthodox Casamayor ...
If there were issues or discomfort with his trainer in pre-fight training? Maybe its fair, only those close would know. It sure seemed to me Gamboa ws getting sound advice in using DEFENSE and movement. It also seemed like Gamboa has been doing the same routine a long time and wasnt listening to anyone but himself:good I KNOW this much for certain. Put Gamboa in a ring with Guy's like PAC and JMM? The hands down carelessness will come back to haunt him bigtime. Clearly Gamboa's speed, athleticism, and skill is exceptional but they gotta try and improve on the focus and respect a bit. Should be interesting to see who is chosen as the next trainer.
Berenstein is an AMAZING trainer but like other posters I just don't think it would be a good fit. Floyd senior could probably teach him the best out of the crops of trainers out there (defense of course)
