Argentinian WBA LHW champ Hugo ''Pigu'' Garay will make the second defense of his title against russian David Gogiya on june 21st at the Club Sports Liberty Stadium in Sunchales,Santa Fe,Argentina.
Good grief. This guy needed home cooking to beat Mger Mkrtchyan, and that's his best win. This is a defense that would make Zsolt Erdei blush.
I kinda agree with you but the talks of Uzelkov or Brahmer or anybody else probably never materialized so they called Gogiya.
I know these kinds of things happen, let's just hope he doesn't make a habit of it. I'd ultimately like to see him get one last shot at Erdei or fight Shumenov.
Ultimately? He's like 28,29,it's not like he's gonna retire tomorrow. He's still young.I feel Garay is an underrated fighter. He defended against a good fighter in Brahmer last time out. I doubt Erdei will tempt the faiths a third time wit hhim.Shumenov would be great. If the kazakh would beat Garay it would be a great feat.
I didn't mean to make it sound like Hugo was knocking on retirement's door , just that I'd like to see either one of them be the next "big" fight for him. We'll see how it turns out, but I get the feeling that Shumenov and Garay will both be campaigning for the August fight with Erdei. Whether or not Zsolt takes on either one, is anyone's guess and a whole other story.
Considering who he's fighting in June, there's no reason he shouldn't be ready to fight again in August. Gogiya can't crack a quail egg, and it will have been about a 7 month layoff for Garay by the time that fight happens so it's not as if he'll be worn down.
Wins over Jackson Chanet, Mger Mkrtchyan and Stjepan Bozic are probably his 3 best, not great by any means. Disappointing defence. Garay himself is actually an under-rated fight, I mean his resume isn't great either, though comprehensive wins over Juergen Braehmer and Yuri Barashian. But you could argue he's never legitimately lost, one DQ loss and SD & MD losses both against Zsolt Erdei so. Hopefully this is just a routine defence to keep in shape and active and then we can see better defences. Looking at the latest WBA rankings I see Braehmer has got himself into the #1 position again. I'd be disappointed if he has to make that defence as a mandatory again though, that doesn't interest me in the slightest given how comfortable a win it was last time. Hopefully we can see him in with the WBA #3, the unbeaten Aleksy Kuziemski, or better yet Beibut Shumenov who was ranked #9, probably a few places higher after the TKO4 win over Byron Mitchell. Or better yet, maybe there's hope of a 3rd fight with Erdei and unification. Meh, probably not.
I haven't seen a lot either to be honest. I was just looking down the WBA rankings and looking at the high ranked fighters. The only fight I've seen is his TKO5 win again the 19-0 Armin Dollinger, which was his most recent fight back in March. He doesn't look anything special to be honest, just tries to stalk in a sort of cautious manner and tries to utilize his right hand, seems to have good timing and accuracy though and can counter punch when coming forward. But he comes forward leaning back a lot, no real lateral movement or head movement. Doesn't look to have much power though judging by his record, and at the stoppage the punchers were landing consecutively by Dollinger wasn't visibly hurt. Well I think another Brahm er fight would be good. The german seems more motivated than ever and has acknowledged the first fight wasn't his best performance. Uzelkov IMO would be another good fight and also he was promised a title shot after beating Lakatus.Don't know how UBP worked the WBA to put Brahmer there but I can't say I'm really dissapointed. Kuziemsky would be good too.
Anytime. :good As long as Braehmer puts in a better performance but that's not something I'm banking on. Uzelkov wouldn't be a bad fight either on paper - thought I haven't seen Uzelkov. Lakatos was a good win for him though it seems - against a guy who's only lost to the best like Michalewski, Erdei, Garay himself etc. I'm hoping Beibut Shumenov can get a title shot relatively soon against somebody. I'd still like to see him face Alejandro Berrio 'cos I think it would be a very good fight while it lasts. But hopefully he'll get one soon - maybe Garay will give him the chance. I can't see him ever getting a shot against Erdei though. I think Zsolt knows now that he wouldn't be able to deal with a tough big punching pressure fighter with decent technical skills like Shumenov. I think the only way it could potentially happen is if Shumenov gets into the mandatory position. Even so, I think Erdei loves his unbeaten record even more than his WBO belt so he'll probably drop it. Imagine if it did come off though and Shumenov won, being the lineal champion inside 10 fights.
I think Brahmer will do better and anyway he is always exciting, the first fight wa sgood. Uzelkov altough he did beat Lakatus wasn't exactly impressive really,in the thread I made about myself, some ukranian guy and Axe all scored it for Lakatus by a point but it could have gone either way.The scoring itself was atrocious. I don't think anybody will fight Shumenov soon for a title.Especially not Erdei.
