I love Garing Lane. Favourite HW journeyman for sure. I'm watching his fight with Chagaev now. It goes five. His engine still looks ok despite his weighing 320 and aged 40!! He's the type of guy James Toney would be eyeing up uncomfortably at a pie-eating contest. Still, even at this stage of his career he's plodding forwards nicely in round two, after getting picked off in round one at distance he "swarms" in showing neat footwork, and some great old pro tricks, switching defense to crossarm, leaning on the inside, rolling and flinching with punches. He looks nice (tits aside). Chagaev warms up nicely in this fight too by the way, my favourite performance of the early part of Ruslan's career. Anyway, Garing had been in with Buster Mathis Jnr., Jeremy Williams, Renaldo Snipes, Larry Holmes, Trevor Berbick, Bowe (twice), Sanders (Twice), other guys...and he usually came to fight inspite of the weight. Here's his glory moment against Garcia, 32-2-1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULO4QdzEZM Lane's final tally: 22-39-2, stopped nine times. These guys make the world go round.
Nice to hear your respect for a journeyman. I have my favorites too, guys like Jesse Ferguson. Good post.
Don't laugh, but Garing Lane was once trained by Eddie Futch....... In fact, I think Futch worked Lane's corner when he fought Holmes on the Tuesday night mismatches USA network in the 1990s..... I have the tape in a box laying around here---somewhere.... MR.BILL
Reminds me of Craig Payne a lot. Fat, but skilled. Both relaxed with surprisingly solid stamina, often went the distance with world class opposition. Both sprung the occasional upset. Funny enough they fought. Lane won.
I still remember the night when Bigfoot Martin pulled the upset over Tim Witherspoon on the good old Tuesday Night Fights.. Martin was another tough JM, I also remember him knocking Moorer down, again on Tuesday Night Fights.... Man I miss that show .........:tomb
It's funny, I was watching TV last night and they were showing old Tuesday night fight reruns on Korean TV. I got to watch Michael Carbajal beat down Thomas Cordoba and Oba Carr beat Alfred Ankamah. Good fights.
They actually fought each other on Tuesday night fights. Lane won. As Bonescrusher noted, it was a great program.
I liked SCRAPIRON JOhnson out here at olympic aud. he kinna became a cult hero. Also liked cookie wallace,Chuck Leslie LH who could have been a star proper mgt. Also another guy could have been a star Jimmy King Fletcher.man that guy could punch.:bbb:bbbhe kod Amos big train Lincoln &thad Spencer!!
I enjoyed them Tuesday night mismatches from the USA network WAY MORE than the ESPN Friday night horse**** cards that go on every other week here in 2011...... TRUTH!! MR.BILL:bbb:good:yep
ALSO! Since the cool Nick Charles has now departed, why doesn't Showtime seek guys like Sean O'Grady and Al Albert to fill some gaps.?.? Showtime needs to give Gus Johnson the axe...... Gus sucks as a boxing host..... That guy is not heavy enough for the job.... LOOK! I can see Gus being an occasional "Fill-In" host, but no way in hell should he be the regular host in 2011.... Showtime needs to smell the coffee and hire a more seasoned / qualified guy to host the show alongside the great Al Bernstein.... MR.BILLthink:hey:good:hat
