Against a 7-9 Croatian journeyman...... Wonder how long Cornish will carry on fighting these low-level journeymen for before stepping up? He's already 3 years into his career and nearly 20 fights in, really hope he steps up sometime later this year.
Tommy Gilmore has justified it as a keep busy fight as they wait for British title eliminators to be announced.
Well, at least he stopped him impressively. Just hope he makes the leap in competition sooner rather than later.
Knocked his opponent down twice in round one and once more in round two before the referee stopped it, which isn't bad as this lad went the distance with Hughie Fury. As has been said Gilmour stated it was a keep busy fight prior to British title eliminators being announced.
Cornish never had much of an amateur career and he's only in his mid to late 20's, so he's still a baby for a heavyweight, but apparently he's in line for a decent test in July on the Chisora-Fury bill in Manchester.
Gary can only beat who is put in front of him,I know gary would step in the ring with anyone in britain,as that is what he is like. Having only been boxing for 6/7 years altogether, including amateur, only shows what a good young prospect he really is! Gary himself, trains harder than any british heavyweight out thereand is unbeleivably strong and super super fit! Gilmour,I beleive , has been doing the right thing with gary, nice and slow, always wins the race! Now though,I suspect,is the right time to move up in class, but with talk of title eliminators, who out there who thinks they are going to be involved in the eliminators,is going to jeapordize their chances of a title shot,by fighting gary,no one I suspect! The word out there is that he is far too dangerous an opponent for most to get beat by,thus ending any title chances!! Having had about 100 less boxing matches overall than joshua,a statement was made , by stopping the boy in round 2,but could of easily been round one!! Its only because he is undefeatred that so called people in the know, are saying he is boxing nobodys, but when he becomes the first scottish heavyweight champion, eveyone will say he got managed correctly, and everyone involved did the right things for gary. You cant win by winning eh!!!
So why cant we see Cornish vs Hughie Fury , Joshua , Ian Lewison or Big bad John , even a fight against Tom Dallas would be more interesting than whats being lined up recently !
Tom Dallas is the only fight there for Gary.. People need to hold the reigns with him slowly is the best way with world class sparring.. Hughie Fury and Anthony Joshua are levels above him at the minute and there is no shame in that both good amateurs.. Big John is too big a risk maybe in a few fights.. Dallas is ideal a bit of a step up see how he goes. Maybe the likes of Rogan/Skelton or Sprott after that.
Hughie won a Junior World Amateur Gold Medal.. That's a very high level!! Watching both fighters and on boxing ability Hughie is a very high level and has a very good skill set. Gary is learning every fight. Skill wise Hughie is better than Anthony Joshua and I believe has more talent. The question with Hughie will be power and we will see that as he matures. I think every Scotsman would love a heavyweight who can be British Champion. Gary has that chance but he needs time. Small steps not big steps. He's improving A lot 2 years ago I would say he had 0 chance of winning a British title . I would say if he keeps improving he has a good chance. Tommy knows what he's doing. I'm sure he will be careful here
