Recently learned that ex boxer Gary Jacobs comes into my work now and again. What are peoples opinions of him as a fighter?I don't remember him as I was very young when he was at his best.
Very good fighter, I think he was the only active Jewish fighter in the UK at the time. He got beaten by Whittaker in a world title shot but theres no disgrace in that and was def the best welter in Europe at the time and a solid world top 10.
Yep 147, Whittaker was always going to be a class above. Jacobs would have def. got a WBO/WBU world title if he were fighting now. Whats he doing these days?
A guy walked into your office that fought 12 rounds with Pernell Whitaker Shake the guys hand, and never wash it again.
Exacty. the scotsman decked a prime Pernell, does it get any better than that? OK, so Jacobs didnt 'deck' a prime sweet pea. I wish he did! However, going the distance withthe greatest P4P fighter of his era & not getting knocked out was a big achievement. Gary Jacobs, criminally underrated. If ESB had a scottish boxing forum, Gary jacobs would be a star. Its as simple as that. North of the border jacobs is still remembered fondly.
jacobs was a real cutie, knew all of the moves.remember the sweatpea fight he did himself proud no disgrace in losing to a genuine atg.
I always rated Gary Jacobs being from Scotland myself, and the fact he was a southpaw as well. He was very good but not quite there, and easily one of the best fighters in Europe in his time. He fought very well against a very crafty Buddy McGirt, but my favourite win of his was against Frank Warren's undefeated hype welterweight of the time George Collins, he just had too much ring smarts to be beaten by someone who'd been fed journeymen and had an artificial unbeaten streak. So yes - a tip of the hat definitely goes out to Gary Jacobs.
George Collins, nows theres a name!! Fed easy wins to get something like 30-0, then stepped up twice , got beat both times and retired in his mid-twenties.
Georgie Coliins was a solid fighter, I saw quite a few of his and his brothers bouts. But I know quite a few people who made a penny or two on the Jacobs fight; George was good but was not at Jacobs level. Tony could of been for real, but burnt out too early due to poor matchmaking IMO; a lesson which Warren learnt from.
I've got good memories of George Collins doing a funny little dance when he got kayoed by Kirkland Laing. Sort of six steps backwards shuffle followed by collapsing on his arse in the corner. Jacobs was a good fighter, underrated. I remember watching a few of his fights on the TV back in the day.
Dunky Gary Jocobs was a fine fighter. A very good fighter certainly by European standards and world contender. Correct me if I am wrong but I don't remember him putting Whittaker. Did he really can't say I remember? I think Hacobs was much better than Colin Jones and Kirkland Laing not quite as good as Raggamuffin man Lloyd Honeyghan. What I loved about Jacobs was that he fought the very best. I mean can you ask for better than to fight Whittaker and James Buddy McGirt for world titles. Great lad and a real gentleman.
