RIP fella, Gary was a very good boxer who could'nt quite break away from under Frank Bruno's shadow, in many other era's he would have had more title fights. I played one Rugby League game against him and my appreciation of just how strong heavyweights are increased tenfold, he was also suprisingly athletic for such a big man.
Sad to hear. He was the first boxer to give Lewis a tough fight and beat everyone else he faced. He had heavy hands in the ring and everything I've heard about him outside the ring suggests that he was a great guy. Didn't he open a jewellers called "Punch & Jewelry"? A great sense of humour as well as some very good work with his fists in the ring.
Embarrassed ta say, never heard of Gary Mason. What were some of his career highlights, 'n what made him so popular?
Sad news. It has been rough for former british champs. 3 years ago James Oyabola was shot to death , and now Gary Mason gets killed in traffic. He was a strong, hard punching guy. I have never understood why he never tried to continue after the Lewis loss. In todays arena he would most definitely have fought for the title. RIP.
He was well known in UK. He was a very good British and European level boxer in the 80s and 90s. He was British champ during the early years of Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno. In fact Lewis was the only person ever to beat him. I think injury may have stopped him going on to world level im not sure this was a bit before my time. He then worked occasionally as a ring announcer on Sky TV. A nice guy and the British public liked Gary Mason. **** news really:-(
