Awful news. Watched a couple of his fights a few weeks ago, top fighter and by all accounts a top man. Wish his family all the best.
One of the fighters i used to watch alot as a kid, a good fighter and even better bloke. Awful news. RIP Gary
Gary was a real larger than life character, met him several times and watched him box, Terry Lawless had three talented heavyweights in Gary, Horace Notice and Bruno and the sparing sessions could be quite tasty. At the time the three of them were constantly criticised by sections of the media and fans alike but what we would give to have three British heavyweights like that now! When I think of Gary I always chuckle that in them days heavyweights averaged around 16 stone but Gary frequently came in much heavier which got a bit of adverse publicity, George Francis and Mickey Duff decided to book him into a health farm for one of his training camps and on the day of the weigh in he was even heavier than normal!! Good bless you Gary and RIP
very likeable character, always wanted to see him fight bruno, for what ever reason it never happend.RIP.
Terrible news for everyone connected to Gary and British boxing. A true gent and an inspiration. R.I.P
me and burnleyblue just had a beer for him at teatime. the man was a real gent and a good person altogeather. my heart goe's out to his family. may he rest in piece and have a great afterlife ps,to billyboy balbo,****. nothing else
By the accounts I have read, he was a thoroughly decent man. Always an honest trier, a stout chin and clubbing power got him on the fringes of world class, and a top 10 ranking by the alphabet organizations. I got to see him a number times on his rise, and he certainly did improve, and although he was never going to be confused with Pep, he had some cunning and subtleties about his work, and he could bang. I will never forgot that howl Tyrell Biggs made when Mason caught up with him, in probably his best win. A sad loss.
Gary also went to school with Tony Adams, Gary used to always tell the tale of when he 'completely marked him out t he game'. Adams just said he was scared. He got sacked by Sky for swearing, what happened he lent his tie to someone who was on TV earlier. The guy did not return it and Gary said 'Give me my F%^&*N tie' just as they went on air. Skys loss because Gary was very knowledgeable, and funny as hell. I have had a miserable day , but know i was privelidged to have known him.
He also got warned by the board for betting on his own fight, can't remember who it was. He bet on the 8th and got him in the 9th.
Used to see him about in the Medway Towns years ago. He always seemed a genuinely nice, good humoured character. Sorely missed. RIP Gary.
