I'd like to here some you're opinions on the English heavyweight Gary Mason who was quite promising in the late 80's and early 90's. Mason had a record of 37-1 with 34 KO's but was forced to end his career early because of problems with his right eye. Mason was a very solid fighter, he was awkward but was very strong and had a solid jab to go along with lots of power. Mason's only loss was to a young less experienced Lennox Lewis. In the fight it seemed at least in my eyes that Mason carried a lot of the fight and was giving a young Lewis a lot of trouble but Lewis managed to do some serious damage to the right eye of Mason which always seemed to be his achlies heel forcing the fight to be stopped with Mason still in the fight landing good punches, it wouldn't surprise at all if Mason was leading on the cards at the time of the stoppage. Mason also defeated good pros such as James Tillis, Alfonzo Ratliff, Everett Martin, and Tyrell Biggs.

I feel Mason could've potentially been a player in the heavyweight division if he didn't have to end his career early. He was very strong and awkward which as shown by fighters like Trevor Berbick can give well school'd top notch fighters problems at times. I don't think he was championship material but I believe he could've been a very valid challenger for the belt and even possibly had captured a world title if he got a shot at the right time.

Not good enough. Too static. But literally one bump below only. Absolutely loved the guy when I was a kid.

Tend to agree with McGrain. He was strong as hell and extremely durable, but just a bit too plodding and one-dimensional at the highest level, as shown when a relatively green Lewis beat him.

But I'd have loved to have seen him and Bruno in the same ring swapping leather.

good honest fighter a good European level he would of always been just below real world champion level . his biggest limitations for me were his lack of hand and foot speed

first off all he was a good bloke..tragically killed whilst hit by a van whilst cycling in jan 11.
good boxer tough but a bit slow..only one loss though to ATG LENNOX..so great record..lost his earnings in several failed business ventures ended up as a good boxing pundit on sky but got sacked for swearing on air....he was too slow to beat a Tyson or a Holyfield but may have given Bowe a tough night...Mason v Bruno would never happen as same management..but would have been interesting fight...tough to call....his best win was against Tyrell Biggs who was beginning to outbox him but then Mason forced a stopage..Tyrell claimed he ran out of gas due to a heavy cold..but it was a typical solid Mason effort. He lost to Lewis who had speed to go with his power..speed being the one attribute that Gary lacked.
he did alot of charity work after fighting and was training for some kind of event when killed. Very good fighter and a smashing bloke.

A super nice bloke, but I got to see him live a few times and he was not top level. But a quality chin and decent power gets you a long way in the Heavyweights, and he would of been a threat to all but the very top of the division.

Tight peekaboo and very tough and strong as an ox. Pretty stiff but technically sound with a decent workrate. Could have picked up some bigger wins if Lennox didn't end his career and we know how good Lennox was and he pushed Lenny too.

I think Mason and Bruno were very similar in many ways both were extremely strong, both were awkward in their attack, both had one punch knock out power, both were very tight and would slow down as the fight went on. I feel Bruno was more conventional in his approach and possessed the harder punch but if they met Mason would certainly have a chance with Bruno's suspect chin and poor stamina plus the very awkward attack of Mason could be potentially difficult for any fighter to deal with.
