The 6th of January as you probably know is the anniversary of Gary's death. I unfortunately never met him in person but was a big fan of his career as a young man . Any memories of thoughts about him would be a fitting tribute to a very good fighter and decent man. RIP champ.
A big man with a big punch, he'd always give an entertaining night no matter who he was up against, and he gave a young Lewis a good fight, too. I wish we were able to see more of him during the 90s, but he left us with a great record. 37 (34) - 1 RIP, champ.
very sad that he passed away so young. I wish i knew more about his career. Was he past it when he fought Lewis? RIP Champ.
Mason was such a nice guy. Good puncher (though not elite), with solid chin. Never knocked down or hurt as far as I remember. Took Lennox´s, Mark Willis (2 kos of still useful Greg Page) and David Jaco! (Jaco stopped a young Razor Ruddock) Not fast, especially his feet, but a surprisingly good combination puncher. Very strong. Would have been a handful for anyone. Always fought in the shadow of Bruno. Worked for Sky as a guest commentator, I enjoyed his banter, thought he was pretty good. Most exciting wins: Tyrel Biggs, Jess Harding, Denroy Bryan, Hughroy Currie, Mark Willis, Lorenzo Boyd+slew of devasting kos RIP Champ
Kind of. More of a surprisingly big step up earlier than expected for the Olympic Gold medalist, prospect Lewis. Lewis was probably perceived as having the likely higher career ceiling, but Mason was the bookies favourite, iirc, such was the embryonic stage of Lennox's pro career.
I watched him against Biggs and Lewis. He was a solid pressure fighter, hard puncher who could deliver good combinations (especially on the body) and very courageous. On the other side, he was rather stiff, slow footed, lacked stamina and versatility in his game. Such a shame that he didn't face more high profile contenders.
