Good take, but I'd almost bet a testicle that Rigo's reach advantage would be nullified by Russells edge in power and speed. Yeah......all of us Donaire fans were saying the SAME thing when that fight was made, but that was a p4p #3 Donaire, who'd been making millions each fight for a couple yrs and had clearly lost his hunger as he admitted and we just refused to believe. Russell otoh, is HUNGRY. He's gotten almost NO hype outside the demographic, and is ripe to take over the division and enter the p4p ranks. Why is it that NONE of the top names from SBW or even FW are mentioning GRJ. Im of the opinion, that while Lomachenko did thoroughly beat GRJ, he lost rds, at least 4, in the process. Something only Salido, bwo fouling for 24 of the 36 minute, has been able to do. Not saying Russell would beat Loma in a rematch....I dont believe he could....just too much size and skill disparity, but you dont see Loma hanging around 126 to go thru it again either. Lomachenko has given GRJ great praise since their fight, going as far as saying he was a tougher fight than was Salido. The GRJ/Loma fight made each fighter better because of it, takign both fighters from prospect to elite in 36 minutes. I will state, MOFly, that GRJ is the man to beat at 126, in spite of what boxrec, ring, and TBR have to say irt this.
I'm honestly not even sure if this dude is all that hungry, look at his career, for the first 5-6 years he's been fighting TBAs. Then turned it up a little bit with Loma and Gonzalez and now again is back to fighting TBA's/being inactive. Compare it to Loma who's seeking more and more challenges. I think Russell is an exciting fighter, it's rare we get such a freakishly gifted athlete. I definitely would like him to be in some more big fights and I think at 126, as you say he's a beast. But his team seems to be content on keeping him mainly on the sidelines which is somewhat annoying. Still, Rigo is all wrong for him IMO, that's not to say GRJ is trash if he got schooled by him, nothing like that, it's just that I think Rigo is one of those anti-styles matchups for him.
