I don't agree about his defense because who has he fought? Put him in there with someone that can box a little with a reach advantage, maybe the last guy Gamoba beat....Solis....I think, then we'll see how good he is defensively and how effective his offense is. Or if you really want to test him, put him in with a guy that's not afraid to get hit... Salido. He doesn't appear to hit as hard as Gamboa, even if he may be a touch faster. He does look good though, at second glance, better than I initially thought. Gamboa would have knocked out his opponents though.
I don't really want to go into details, but I'll say that it has to do with has balance. There are things he does that could potentially be exploited by a higher quality opponent. The guys I've seen him in the ring with have been very slow, and one dimensional. And I wonder if he hits that hard. He certainly isn't in Gamboa's league in terms of power. I do agree that he has very fast hands though and has a lot of potential.
Future of the sport? Broner(obviously) - a G Russel -Hopefully a G, but we'll have to wait and see. Rios - a G Gamboa - a G Our sport is in good hands
Who does Russell need to beat to prove he's a serious contender? He's obviously not ready for Salido/Gamboa/Juanma, yet. Probably not going to fight Mickey Garcia yet either. Who should he fight next? Bernabe Concepcion? Yourdan? Might even need another fight, before he challenges the top 20.
Yordan is NOT down on the same level as Bernabe Concepcion. :nono On a good night Yordan gives any of the champs all they can handle. Concepcion on his best night doesn't win a single round against any of the champions on their worst night. I think Yordan might be just a bit too rich for Russell's blood as of this moment. Horrible risk/reward. Russell would smoke Bernabe like a hookah. Excellent risk/reward.
I've really only seen Yordan once(as I recall); against Caballero. Celestino beat the living crap out of him. I guess he was having a bad night. He looked slow.
So, why the **** is there not a Gary Russell Jr express yet? Goddam it ESB, get this express happening.
I don't think he looks all that special to be honest, he reaches and falls in with his left alot and he obviously doesn't have great power
-Very good balance -Very good jab -Works from the jab -Good combination of punches (jab, hook, uppercut, straight & overhand left) -Excellent hand speed (above average) -Excellent timing -Good combinations. Puts them together well -Good foot movement -Good defense (high guard, uses angles and stays in the middle of ring) -Good body work -Average power, but so fast opponent doesn't see it coming -Super fast reflexes -Very relaxed and posed -Excellent finisher I'll be following this prospect and can't wait to see how progresses after accumulating 20+ fights.
