He's had 19 fights and his opposition has progressed to about where Gamboa's was at 10.

Russell's ceiling is as high as either of theirs, IMO.

ALL Cuban boxers are technically sound ( I'm talking about elite ones ) , after all they all come from the same program ( school ) , they share the same coaches and trainers at each stage of their boxing education , from children to juvenile to adults , they're all taught the same , what differentiate them is their character , their actitude , some are brawlers like Gamboa , Luna , Franco etc , other are more calmed in the ring , they are counterpunchers like Rigondeaux , Romero , Balado , etc , still others are a cmbination of the two like Savon , etc . Peace .

 

Gary Russell would get his ass kicked and schooled by both.

 

Gamboa is no doubt elite but you have to admit he isn't as technically sound as many of his countrymen. That isn't to say the quality training wasn't there, but for some people it's in one ear and out the other - as you say, differences of character. Gamboa is the type who relies far more on his athletic talents, and knows he can do that, and will never look to rectify that and could suffer for it when he gets older and loses his speed and reflexes. (like Jones Jr.)

 

Russell Jr is 23 years old , by the time Gamboa was 22 years old he was already an Olympic champ .... he had to defeat the Moldovan national champ , a very good , fast and technical little boxer ( forgot his name ) , then Gamboa had to defeat the Thai who was the World champ , then came Balahktyn the Russian national and double European champ in the semifinals , Gamboa toyed with him , literally took him to school , then in the final he defeated Thomas the French champ and former World and European champ for the gold ... Russell still needs to improve his boxing skills more before giving such a statement , he's not on Gamboa's level yet . Peace .

i read this interview a while ago. i agree. i think he can whoop Gamboa. Donaire would be a tough fight tho but its more realistic. Gamboa is moving up and Donaire is 1 weight class below him. i can see this fight happening 2 or 3 years down the line.

 

Agreed.Hes in for a humbling experience if he fight donaire.

Nonito and Gamboa are special talents, P4P fighters, anybody can look good fighting bums

 

He didn't say they weren't more accomplished, he said they aren't as technically sound.

Two completely separate things.
