Deep down Russell knows it would be a very hard nights work vs Josh, like hell and back. Josh is active, huge for the weight, and on a roll. There is nothing, absolutely nothing on his record to suggest this fight was beneath him. If anything it would have been a step up. He has done F all since Loma pulled his pants down.

Gary Russell trains for about two months, fights once a year, makes a million dollars, takes off for basically 10 months, comes back, trains two months, fights once, takes off 10 months ...

    It's a sweet deal.

    Gary Russell purses ...

    Vs. Nyambayar ($1 million)
    Vs. Martinez ($1 million)
    Vs. Joseph Diaz ($1.4 million)
    Vs. Escondon ($500,000)

He has wasted his prime and will have very little legacy. I thought losing to Loma would light a fire under him, but he has been content to cruise. And maybe he can do it another couple of years and build up a sufficient nest egg to retire comfortably, but I doubt he is there yet.

I don't think he's fighting for legacy at all. He's a 32-year-old who makes a million dollars working two months a year.

And he seems to be happy.

That's good enough for him. Good work if you can get it. Sometimes, it is ONLY about the money. Nothing else.

WHO’S THE MAN? KIKO MARTINEZ PREDICTS POTENTIAL GARY RUSSELL JR.-JOSH WARRINGTON OUTCOME

Former IBF junior featherweight titleholder Kiko Martinez would be an interested bystander if the much-discussed contest between WBC featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. and former IBF counterpart Josh Warrington comes to pass.

The rugged Spanish fighter would be well placed to offer an opinion on the proposed contest, having previously shared a ring with both men. Martinez lost a 12-round majority decision to Warrington in May of 2017 and was stopped in five rounds by Russell in a WBC title attempt in May of 2019.

Warrington (30-0, 7 knockouts), who is rated No. 1 by The Ring at 126 pounds, recently vacated his IBF title and will face Mauricio Lara over 10 rounds on February 13.

The working plan is then to face either, No. 2-rated Russell (31-1, 18 KOs) or No. 3-rated Xu Can (18-2, 3 KOs), potentially with the vacant Ring Magazine belt on the line in April.

Martinez feels Russell’s superlative skills would be pivotal if the American were to emerge victorious.

“The main key is his speed, of course,” Martinez told The Ring through Oscar Zardain. “Also his southpaw stance and ability to move around the ring avoiding the attack of his opponent.”

Conversely he believes Warrington needs to turn the bout into a dog fight.

“He is very strong and he can fight at a fast pace with a high volume of punches,” he said. “His strategy is very good too.”

Martinez broke down each fighter in 10 key categories:

    JAB
    Russell:
Very fast, too fast for my reflexes.

    DEFENSE
    Russell:
Very difficult to hit. He has very good footwork [which made it difficult to land punches].

    HANDSPEED
    Russell:
Of course, speed is his biggest strength.

    FOOTWORK
    Russell:
    He has very good footwork.

    SMARTEST
    Warrington:
He is very intelligent and a very good tactician.

    STRONGEST
    Warrington:
He is a big guy for the featherweight division and a real athlete.

    POWER
    Russell:
Speed kills. He is not the biggest puncher that I faced in my career but he can hurt you with his speed and accuracy.

    CHIN
    Warrington:
He is very strong and he can take hard punches. I hit him in our fight with very good punches on the chin and he resisted.

    SKILLS
    Russell:
Russell has better boxing skills. Warrington has good fundamentals too but Russell is more complete.

    BEST OVERALL
    Russell:
It is a difficult question but maybe Gary is a little more complete than Warrington.

Martinez is torn on the outcome of the fight but, by the smallest of margins, sides with the American speedster.

“In my opinion, it’s a very close fight,” reasoned Martinez. “Both fighters have very good skills and the winner can be decided by details. To be honest, this would be a fight that I would never bet on. I would pick in favor of Russell [by a percentage of] 55-45.”

Oh, I agree he doesn't care. Just an observation as a fan. I like his talent.

My question is more whether he has earned enough income to do it this way. He's a young man and has to pay out the various people working with him plus hefty taxes. But maybe he will have a cashout fight in a couple years for more money, or maybe he's content to lead a relatively modest lifestyle. I have nothing against him, just disappointed.

GRJ has hand problems, that is probably the reason he doesn't fight as often as some. I don't know much about his hand problems but it could be because he is a small framed person with small hands and he punches hard. Like Dubblechin posted, GRJ is making good money now.

He and his family do things right, they train at night at the time other people their age are out getting into trouble. The gym has a "family" atmosphere. Gary Sr. and an older son run the training day to day for the active Gary Russells, Antonio, Antuanne, and Jr. We go to their gym occasionally and the Russells treat us like family. I hope they all do well and I hope they all get out of boxing financially set and healthy.

No, he's not. And that's probably what makes him so irritating. He should know better what position he is in. Or maybe he does and simply doesn't care at all about fans or boxing.

He's been getting a million to fight low level boxers. Don't ever expect him to step up any more unless he's being OVERPAID even more. I was a big fan of this guy when he came on to the scene. It's a shame to see this crappy attitude in someone who really has no leveraging position on anything, other then a promoter who overpays him to fight scrubs.
