Johnny Gonzales wants Mares, but Mares will be ordered to face another in a mandatory.

Will Johnny take this fight? Who wins?

"Featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr. is slated to appear on Showtime on the undercard of light heavyweight titlist Bernard Hopkins’ defense against mandatory challenger Karo Murat at the Barclays Center on July 13. Finding an opponent for Russell is always difficult, and this fight is no different.

“We have made a very strong offer to (former titlist) Jhonny Gonzalez and we’re waiting to hear from him,” Schaefer said."

Good fight for Russell Jr. to take. Much better than Mares who he hasn't done enough to fight.

This will be a great fight. Damn, Goldenboy really isn't holding back. They've been putting together solid gold, outside of the Floyd fight, though.

Excellent fight!!! One of my old faves in Gonzales vs. a new fave in Russell Jr. At this point, I'd have to take Russell. Jhonny's been a fave of mine for a decade, but he's getting long in the tooth, and his punch resistance is getting LOW. Would love to see gonzales turn back the clock once more, but I think Russell Jr has too much for him now.

I'm guessing Gonzales won't take the fight. He probably feels he has already earned his shot, so will fight cab drivers in Mexico until he gets his shot.

Good step up for GR finally. Winnable fight against a dangerous, but chinny vet. I'm wondering if it will go to the scorecards either way Russell needs this win. Looking spectacular helps, but more importantly just win at this stage.

I'm backing for Jr to get the knockout, only bigger and better things from now on. Truly one of the best talents in boxing today.
