don't worry, After this fight, i GUARANTEE he'll be fighting Ponce De Leon(or if the other guy wins) next for a title. this is my prediction.
I can't be too angry with Team Russell. Gary has said in several interviews that he would love to fight PDL, Juanma, Gamboa and other top fighters from 126lbs to 130lbs. yet I cannot recall anyone saying or claiming that they want a fight with Russell Jr. Yet when he struggles to find a worthy opponent, or a decent opponent backs out and a replacement get thrown into the ring...this is somehow Team Russell's fault?
Saw Gusev fight once, last year against a Thai prospect in a fight where he was dropped and fell behind before finding a way to turn it into a mauling, clinch-filled affair. Even then, I still had his opponent up by a point or two when all was said and done. Anyway, he's a solid but unspectacular guy...much like the caliber of fighter that Russell has faced over the course of his career. GRJ should be able to defeat him without too much difficulty...though I guess it remains to be seen how Mr. Russell will react if Gusev decides to drag him into the mire and make the fight as ugly as possible.
So this guy is not fighting anybody good yet? Russel Jr was looking good a few fights ago. What happened? Did I miss something? Did he have a fight that troubled him more than it ought have? Was looking forward to GRjr being a new somebody to root for.
He's still looked pretty good...It's just that his level of competition has plateaued ever since he waxed Heriberto Ruiz in one. He's still managed to take the two opponents he's faced within three rounds on each occasion...But since he hasn't stepped up in class, it's not drawing the same positive reviews that it did previously. Gusev is pretty durable, it should be noted...if GRJ stops him early, it will still be a feather in his cap.
i dont understand why they are holdin him back so much its not like he had a lack of amateur experience makes people like Broner's resume look too good to be true
