Shaw's ties are with IBF, IBO, and Showtime. Not a bad promoter in terms of protecting his fighter against screwjob decisions, but often makes a lot of promises outside of the actual bout that he cannot keep, e.g. hotel rooms and other extra benefits. One thing about Shaw that you have to give him credit for is that he does not let his fighters duck big-time comp. Examples: Rafa Marquez against Vazquez Darchinyan against Donaire (also a Shaw fighter) Lacy against Calzaghe Chico against anybody Say what you want about that guy, but he makes fights the fans want to see.
I wish these promoters would just go away but it seems that a boxer who just beat Darchiyan would at least be able to find his own nice hotel and flight to the Philipines. I like Donaire and he's a great fighter but his own irrisponsibility is just another lame reason to keep promoters around. Although with HBO/SHOtime in power maybe having someone with deep pockets backing you is a neccessity
Yeah, same piece of **** who made a $100k bet with Castillo to see if he could KO Corrales in the rematch and that ***** didn't want to pay him after the fight.
If i was Donaire i would go to Top Rank. Easily the best promoter at building a boxer into world class. Top Rank have got plenty of boxers at these light divisions too.
Diego Corrales was broke when he signed for Golden Boy because of Shaw's mismanagement. There was a big tirade that Jin Mosley posted on here saying that he doesnt look after his fighters and he'd treatd Diego the same way as he did Shane earlier on. Look at the way Shaw has discarded Jeff Lacy.
That's the point I was gonna get to next. If you lose or are no longer a draw, Shaw will leave you for dead. But then again, what promoter won't???
Let's hear from donaire himself http://www.myspace.com/boxinginterviews Gary shaw answered the allegation.
Yeah, Lacy is not a big fan of Gary Shaw: "Two days before Tarver destroyed Danny Santiago (Dec. 1) at Foxwoods, Lacy told the St. Petersburg Times that he would never fight Tarver as long as he's promoted by Shaw. Tarver is currently under a two-fight deal with Shaw, the first was against Santiago. Lacy told Tarver to find a new promoter, and then they could negotiate a potential fight. "Why would I do anything that made Gary Shaw any money?" Lacy told the paper."
http://www.boxingconfidential.com/articles.php?id=3296 Marley sides with Gary shaw, Take a shot at Nonito. There's also an Interview of Nonito Sr. too.
A responder to your article stated that Donaire only made $35,000 on the Darchinyan fight. Is that true and how much did he make against Maldonado?
He got it wrong. Donaire got $85K, but Gary Got extra $50K from philippine TV & Nonito got nothing out of it. He should get 50% of that accdg to their verbal agreement. Nonito should get $85K + $25K from Phil TV. In the shaw interview, He said He didn't make any money yet off Nonito. That's BS, Showtime paid for the fight(Covers the Purses). The gate & the International TV rights goes to the Promoter. That's a lot of Profit. He needs to be investigated by the IRS.
