I have to chime in on this. Running helps your ring stamina tons. A lot of folks hate it, it's time consuming, boring, and hard, but fighters have been doing it for years and the ones that quit doing it fade quickly. I know from experience. Running is the only exercise I do. I do short club fights(1 minute rounds) and my ability to not puke at the end of them has greatly improved since I began running every day. Running is one of the single most important things you can do as a fighter, you improve your body's overall efficiency. Your heart rate likely will not drop out of cardio range between rounds, or during periods of little action in the fight. Even if it does however with good cardiovascular conditioning every breath and every heartbeat does more for you than it normally would. This is why athletes in great condition have lower resting heart-rates. They don't need to beat harder. Sparring works the muscles you will be using when you fight, which is a massive help, it also helps you learn to relax. If you get around the 6 round mark, it is also helpful for cardio. I also speculate that the short burst of activity help expand vessels and capillaries so you can get oxygen where you need it. Combine with the benefits of running and it's pretty awesome.
